Local sports schedules take hit with approaching storm
With forecasts predicting significant snowfall for Washington and Greene counties today, many high school and college athletic events scheduled for this weekend have postponed or canceled.
The majority of the high school boys basketball schedule for Friday night has been wiped out. Trinity’s Section 5-AAA game at South Fayette has been postponed to Jan. 25, and the Section 4-AAA game between Uniontown and Belle Vernon has been postponed with no makeup date scheduled. In Section 3-AA, the Burgettstown at Fort Cherry game has been rescheduled for Jan. 27, and the Carlynton at Chartiers-Houston game is postponed but has not been rescheduled. In Section 4-AA, Waynesburg at Charleroi has been rescheduled for Feb. 8, Carmichaels at Bentworth is postponed until Jan. 25 and Frazier at Beth-Center is postponed with a makeup date to be determined. In Section 3-A, California will go to Connellsville to play Geibel Catholic Feb 1.
A non-section girls basketball game between Mt. Pleasant and McGuffey has been moved to Jan. 26 as part of a girls/boys doubleheader on the Highlanders’ home court. The Charleroi at Frazier girls game has been postponed with no makeup date announced.
The Waynesburg University basketball doubleheader against Thomas More, originally scheduled for Saturday at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse, has been moved up to Friday. The men’s game will begin at 3 p.m. with the Yellow Jacket women’s team hosting undefeated and top-ranked Thomas More at 5 p.m.
The Duquesne at George Mason men’s basketball game also was shifted from Saturday to Friday in Fairfax, Va. Tip-off will be 2 p.m.
The Waynesburg at McGuffey wrestling match scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled, as has the Canon-McMillan at Trinity girls basketball game and the Ligonier Valley at Belle Vernon wrestling match. The Waynesburg University wrestling quad match at McDaniel is postponed.
