Girls basketball: Gottheld sparks Charleroi’s comeback
Adrianna Gottheld and Maria Claybaugh led Charleroi’s second-half charge as the Cougars overcame a halftime deficit and defeated visiting Southmoreland, 52-40, in a non-section game Tuesday night.
Southmoreland (8-9) led 18-17 at halftime, but Gottheld scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter as Charleroi (14-5) stormed back to take a 39-31 lead. Claybaugh helped the Cougars finish off the Scotties by scoring seven of her 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Olivia Porter was Southmoreland’s leading scorer with 14 points.
Charleroi hosts Washington in a key Section 4-AA game Thursday night. The Cougars and Prexies are tied for first place.
Avella 37, Monessen 32: Avella trailed for much for the game but rallied in the fourth quarter for a 37-32 come-from-behind victory over host Monessen in Section 3-A.
Monessen (0-12, 2-17) led 13-4 after one quarter and 19-17 at halftime. Avella (5-7, 7-10), which remains in the playoff hunt, tied the score at 29-29 after three quarters and outscored the Greyhounds 8-3 over the final eight minutes.
Kodi Georgetti was a big reason Avella won, scoring a game-high 23 points, which included 11 field goals.
Monessen was led by Natalia Holmes, who scored 13 points. Lashaundria Gillaspie had 11 points, but the Greyhounds hurt their cause by making only two of 13 free throws.
Burgettstown 43, Bentworth 38: Kacie Prasko scored 10 of Burgettstown’s 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter as the Blue Devils edged Bentworth, 43-38, in a non-section game.
Prasko had 23 points and the Blue Devils (10-8) outscored the Bearcats (3-15) 16-7 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.
Elle Havelka added 10 points for Burgettstown.
Heather Chester led Bentworth with 20 points, while Grace Marchezak added 11 points in in the losing effort.
Mt. Pleasant 49, McGuffey 42: Carrie Bungard had 15 points as Mt. Pleasant held off McGuffey, 49-42, in a non-section game.
Mt. Pleasant (11-7) jumped out to a 15-5 lead after one quarter, but the Highlanders (1-17) refused to go away, keeping the game in single digits the rest of the way.
Katie Demi had 14 points for McGuffey.
