The first college Canon-McMillan senior Cheyenne Trest visited while in high school was Seton Hill.

It was for a soccer camp her freshman year.

In the time since, Trest decided to focus her attention on the basketball court, becoming a standout player at Canon-McMillan.

And she recently decided she will return to Greensburg and Seton Hill on the basketball court.

“Once they offered, I was pretty excited,” Trest said. “It wasn’t that hard to decide to go there.”

Her contact with the basketball coaching staff began when the point guard attended another camp there, this time for basketball.

In mid-April, Seton Hill head coach Mark Katarski saw Trest play with her AAU team. A couple weeks later, Trest once again made a visit to Seton Hill’s campus. She received a scholarship offer in mid-May, committing by the start of June.

It was her first offer.

“I was looking at some schools that we’re coming to watch later (this summer], so it was sort of hard to decide ‘Do I want to wait until July and see what schools offer later? Or do I want to do this now?'” Trest said. “I decided this was the best choice for me.”

With her future decided, Trest, who traveled to Texas on Saturday for an AAU tournament, said she’s now free to spend the summer circuit just focusing on her game in advance of her final scholastic season with the Big Macs instead of thinking about which coaches are watching from where.

Last season, Trest helped her team to the brink of the PIAA Class AAAA tournament, losing a play-in contest to Mt. Lebanon, 57-50.

“It’s my last year, I just want to go out and win,” she said. “Nothing else is important.”

A handful of area youth golfers, including a key member of the Peters Township 2015 WPIAL Championship and PIAAA runner-up team, performed well at the Tri-State PGA Junior Golf Tournament at Fox Run Golf Course in Beaver Falls last week.

Alec Stopperich, a recent Peters Township graduate, placed third overall and second for the boys 16 to 18 age group Wednesday. He had a first-round 69, good for second in the 30-person field. He followed up with a 71, to finish at 4-under and three strokes behind the winner.

Michael Kondratik of Charleroi tied for 13th overall, and 10th in the boys 16 to 18 division, at 3-over, shooting 72 and 75.

Michael Lubrani of Belle Vernon tied for 20th overall and 16th in the boys 16 to 18 boys division at 8-over. He fired a solid 73 in the second round.

In the girls competition, Mia Kness of Peters Township placed third overall with a 148, 4-over, six strokes off the lead. She had a first-round 75 before shooting 77 in the second round.

Haley Kozel of McDonald, placed second in the girls ages 13 to 15 division and 11th overall after shooting a 174.

Taylor Waller of Canonsburg finished sixth overall with a 152.

Freshmen Austin Smith (Canon-McMillan) and Aiden McCall (Peters Township) will play on Team Pennsylvania at the Brine National Lacrosse Academy and Classic later this month. The events will take place from July 19-22 in Richmond, Va.

College coaches will instruct the players in games against other regional teams.
