Wild Things see both sides in doubleheader
FLORENCE, Ky. – Logan Uxa drove in four runs, Zac Grotz pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and the Wild Things defeated the Florence Freedom, 7-4, in the completion of a suspended game Saturday at UC Health Stadium.
The game had been suspended because of rain Friday night with Washington leading 4-1 in the fifth inning.
Florence earned a split of the doubleheader by winning the second game, 6-2, as pitchers Tony Vocca and Ethan Gibbons combined on a four-hitter.
In the suspended game, Uxa had a two-run single in the first inning and led off the sixth with a solo home run that gave Washington a 5-3 lead. Washington’s David Popkins doubled home a run in the seventh and Uxa followed with a run-scoring single.
Grotz relieved Washington starter Trevor Foss when played resumed Saturday as Florence had the bases loaded. The Freedom scored on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly to pull to within 4-3. Florence would not score again until the ninth inning.
Grotz (2-2) allowed one hit, did not walk a batter and struck out five.
In the second game, Florence knocked out Washington starter Chase Cunningham (3-7) in the second inning. The Freedom scored in each of the first four innings and forged a 5-0 lead.
Washington scored in the sixth when Grant Fink tripled and Austin Wobrock grounded out. Popkins drove in Chris Grayson with a single in the seventh.
