Normal too much for Wild Things
NORMAL, Ill. – Michael Schweiss allowed three hits and one run over seven innings and struck out eight to help the Normal CornBelters hand the Washington Wild Things their second straight loss, 6-1, Wednesday night in a Frontier League game.
Normal belted out 12 hits against three Washington pitchers and broke a close game open with three runs in the fourth inning. Normal used a Washington error and a sacrifice fly to scratch out three runs in the decisive fourth. Dylan Kelly, Aaron Dudley and Elijah Trail each got an RBI.
Mike Fish went 4-for-4 and drove in the game’s first run with a single in the second inning that scored Santiago Chirino.
Washington got two of its three hits and scored its only run in the top of the fifth. Dave Popkins led off with a double and one out later, Scott Carcaise singled him in.
Normal scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to build the five-run cushion. Chirini drove in one run with a single and came around to score on a double by Norman Meadows.
Conner Kendrick gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings but only two were earned. He struck out four and also walked four.
The Wild Things open a three-game series against the Evansville Otter Friday night at Consol Energy Park.
