Rebellion get first win of season

YORK – The Pennsylvania Rebellion opened a six-run lead, then held on for a 7-5 victory over the Akron Racers Wednesday evening for their first win of the National Pro Fastpitch victory of the season in York.

Both softball teams are 1-1.

Victoria Hayward drove in two runs in a four-run second to help stake the Rebellion to an early lead. They made it 6-0 in the third inning when Kristyn Sandberg smashed a two-run home run to make it 6-0.

Akron roared back in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four times and cutting the Rebellion lead to two. The big hit was a two-run home run by Samantha Fischer off Rebellion starter Miranda Kramer, who was replaced by Emma Johnson after the hit.

The Rebellion got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Kayla Winkfield doubled in Whitney Arion to make it 7-4.

That’s the way it stayed until the seventh inning, when Akron threatened to tie the game. A.J. Andrews singled with one out came around to score on a groundout by Taylor Schlopy.

Haylie Wagner came on in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out and retired the next two hitters on a strikeout and fly out.

Winkfield went 2-for-3 and Raven Chavanne went 1-for-2 with an RBI. The Rebellion had seven hits off three Akron pitchers.

Andrews went 2-for-3 and scored twice for Akron, which had six hits. The bottom five of Akron’s lineup went 1-for-11.
