Cal U.’s Fennell drafted by Cardinals
California University senior center fielder Mick Fennell was drafted Saturday in the 22nd round by the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft.
A Butler native, Fennell was the last pick of the round, the 676th player selected in the 40-round draft.
An American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region first team selection as a senior, fennel was a four-year starter for the Vulcans. He set several career highs and led the team in almost every offensive category this spring. Fennell led Cal with a .385 batting average and eight homers as the Vulcans’ leadoff hitter. Fennell also set career highs with 33 RBI and 22 stolen bases, in addition to leading the PSAC with seven triples. He also was named the PSAC West Division Player of the Year.
