Observer-Reporter All-District Softball team
Renner flourished in the No. 3 position in the batting order. She hit nine home runs and her 66 RBI were tops in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. She struck out only once in 92 at-bats. Renner had a 19-2 record as a pitcher with a 1.72 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings.
Bailey Bennington provided much of the oomph to the offense but she also went 7-0 as a pitcher. Bennington hit seven home runs and drove in 35 runs while hitting .519. Twenty-three of her 40 hits went for extra bases. Bennington had a miniscule 0.61 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings. Her play at shortstop was stellar.
The Penn State commit is a multi-sport athlete who enjoyed another strong softball season. Elling led the Hillers with a .484 average and 18 RBI while playing a section with strong pitching. The Hillers, with Elling’s bat, averaged more than six runs per game over the final seven games.
A sure-handed shortstop, Hunter led the Highlanders with five home runs and 28 runs scored as the No. 2 hitter in the lineup. Her eight doubles was second on the team.
After settling in as No. 2 hitter in batting order, Lampe batted .473 with 13 stolen bases and 52 runs. Madison and her twin sister McKenna combined for 109 runs. Madison Lampe hit six home runs and accounted for 80 total bases.
McKenna Lampe set the table for West Greene’s offense, batting .618 for the season with 33 stolen bases from the leadoff spot. She drove in 24 and scored 57 runs in 28 games. The 1-2 punch of McKenna Lampe and her twin sister Madison at the top of the lineup was even more incredible considering both are freshman.
The left-handed Parshall was the top strikeout pitcher in the WPIAL with 213. The Penn State recruit went 12-5 for the Leopards, who were forced to forfeit two games for using an ineligible player and missed the playoffs.
Linda Rush finished her high school career as one of the best hitters in the state. The Drexel recruit had a .718 batting average with 13 home runs and 42 RBI. Her slugging percentage was an incredible 1.474 and on-base percentage was .766.
Tarr’s arm and bat propelled Burgettstown to another strong season and another appearance in the WPIAL playoffs. Tarr compiled a 15-7 record and 1.20 ERA for the Blue Devils. She batted .377 with 26 RBI and 25 runs. She was tied for the team lead with 18 walks.
The right-hander established herself as one of the top pitchers in the WPIAL. The Robert Morris recruit helped the Greyhounds compile a 15-7 record and a run through the WPIAL playoffs. Vatakis compiled a 13-3 record and recorded 167 strikeouts, third-best in the district.
One of the best catchers in the WPIAL, Alderson was unique because of two factors: she is left-handed and used a regular fielding glove instead of a catcher’s mitt. She batted .326 with two home runs and 29 RBI. She had a fielding percentage of .962 with just five errors in 131 chances.
Crawford added punch to a strong offense for the Big Macs. She batted .414 with three home runs, 15 RBI and six doubles. She had an on-base percentage of .474 and a slugging percentage of .628.
Hite was instrumental in helping the Bearcats to a 14-6 record and a spot in the WPIAL playoffs. Hite went 14-5 as a pitcher, tying for fifth in wins in the WPIAL’s regular season, and had 105 strikeouts.
Hondur had an outstanding freshman season playing third base for the Indians. Hondur batted .381 with two home runs and 14 RBI. Her nine walks tied for the team lead.
Kesneck was a strong defensive player and an outstanding hitter. She batted .430 with 23 RBI and 33 runs. Kesneck struck out only two times in 87 plate appearances.
Another of the Pioneers’ super freshmen, Rizor batted .425 with five home runs and 25 RBI. Rizor struck out four times in 87 at-bats. Half of her 37 hits went for extra bases. Rizor, who hit fifth in the lineup, had the fourth-highest slugging percentage on the team at .770.
A center fielder, Shultz hit .531 and knocked in 22 runs. Shultz played the final part of the season with an injured foot but had an OPS of 1.311. Shultz had 22 RBI and scored 24 runs in 17 games.
A four-year starter on teams that went a combined 54-23, Simkovic helped Jefferson-Morgan to a 10-8 record and a spot in the WPIAL postseason. Simkovic hit .375, hit four home runs and had a .686 slugging percentage.
The junior helped the Raiders to a spot in the WPIAL playoffs with a strong hitting effort. She batted .377 with five home runs and 17 RBI. Staley had eight doubles and two triples and committed only one error.
