Schram, Chishko off to strong starts in NCAA wrestling
NEW YORK – Penn State grabbed a 27.5-24 lead over defending NCAA champion Ohio State after two rounds at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, advancing six into the quarterfinals.
Nico Megaludis (125), Jordan Conaway (133), Zain Retherford (149), Jason Nolf (157), Bo Nickal (174) and Morgan McIntosh (197) remained alive in the winner’s bracket for the Nittany Lions heading into the quarterfinals.
Stanford’s Connor Schram opened the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in New York City with a pair of victories Thursday.
Schram, a 125-pound redshirt sophomore from Canon-McMillan High School, won a 5-2 decision over Pitt’s Lorenzo Bentley in the first round and followed it with a 3-1 decision over seventh-seeded Darian Cruz of Lehigh in the second round. Schram, the 10th-seeded wrestler in the weight class, wrestles No. 15 David Terao of American in today’s quarterfinals (11 a.m.). Terao upset second-seeded Joey Dance of Virginia Tech, 5-3 in the second round.
Solomon Chishko, a 141-pound redshirt freshman from Virginia Tech, also won twice Thursday. The former Canon-McMillan wrestler knocked off Mike Pongracz of Chattanooga, 9-3, in the first round and cruised to a 17-1 technical fall over Logan Everett of the Army. Chishko gets No. 2-seeded Joey McKenna of Stanford in the quarterfinals.
Dalton Macri, a 125-pound freshman from Cornell, won his first-round bout against No. 11 Ron Bresser of Oreston State 6-5 in overtime of the first round. Macri, a Canon-McMillan graduate, fell to Conor Youtsey of Michigan, 7-5, in overtime.
Macri fell to the wrestlebacks, where he will face Drew Romeo of the Air force.
Another Canon-McMillan graduate, Cody Wiercioch a 165-pounder at Pitt, was eliminated Thursday.
Wiercioch lost his first-round match, 6-0, to 10th seed Austin Wilson of Nebraska. Wiercioch, a redshirt sophomore, then dropped a 6-1 decision to Forrest Przybysz of Appalachian State in the wrestlebacks.
Semifinals are at 8 p.m. today and the finals are at 8 p.m. Saturday.
