Baseball: Canon-McMillan wins by scoring 2 in bottom of 7th

Josh Palma’s bases-loaded single drove in Nick Serafino from third base and gave Canon-McMillan a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Chartiers Valley in the season-opener for both teams Thursday afternoon.

Canon-McMillan entered the seventh inning trailing 4-3 but Brandon Kline hit a leadoff triple to get the Big Macs’ comeback started. Kline made it 4-4 when he scored on a single Serafino. Two walks loaded the bases and Palma delivered the game-winning hit.

Chartiers Valley led 4-2 after two innings but Canon-Mac used some stellar relief pitching from Zach Rohaley to help turn the tide. Rohaley threw 5 2/3 scorless innings, allowing two hits and no walks.

Tanner Piechnick hit a triple and double for C-M. Serafinop had a triple to go with his game-winning single.

Chartiers Valley’s Brady Gulakowski matched Piechnick by hitting a triple and double.

Carmichaels 18, Frazier 2: Bill Spishock had four hits, including two doubles and a homer, and drove in five runs as Carmichaels whipped Frazier, 18-2, in a six-inning non-section game.

Jacob Wamsley tripled and Nathan Brodwater doubled for the Mikes (1-0) to back the pitching of Jacob Kinsell. Kinsell allowed four hits and struck out nine.

Losing pitcher Cody Morris doubled for Frazier (0-1).

California 14, Washington 6: Winning pitcher Louden Conte scored three times as California topped Washington, 14-6, in a non-section game.

Casey Zajicek had two doubles and drove in four runs, while Bob Harris had a three-run double for the Trojans (1-0).

No information was provided for Washington (0-1).

Chartiers-Houston 2, Burgettstown 0: Ryan Mele and Zach Southern combined on a five-hit shutout as Chartiers-Houston topped Burgettstown, 2-0, in a non-section game.

Mele, who struck out four in five innings, drove in a run in the first with an RBI groundout and he and Southern made that run stand up for the Bucs (1-0).

Brandon Sell took the loss for Burgettstown (0-1), while Alex Takacs doubled for the Blue Devils.

McGuffey 2, Charleroi 0: Adam Townsend hit a solo home run and Dan Orr pitched a three-hit shutout in McGuffey’s 2-0 victory over Charleroi in a nonsection opener.

Orr struck out eight and walked two. McGuffey’s second run, scored in the top of the seventh, came on an error on a ball hit by Orr.

Josiah Fisher struck out nine for the Cougars.

Waynesburg 11, West Greene 1: Hunter Robinson struck out 11 batters in four innings and added a pair of hits as Waynesburg defeated West Greene, 11-1, in a six-inning non-section game at Consol Energy Park.

Trey Rohanna tripled for the Raiders (1-0), while Kyle Blasco and Colin McCracken had two RBI each.

No information was available for West Greene (0-1).

Herndon, Va. 3, Peters Township 2: Herndon, Va., turned a leadoff walk in the sevneth inning into the game-winning run to beat Petes Township, 3-2, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The walk, a fielder’s choice and a single scored the winning run for Herndon and gave Graham Seitz the victory.

Jake Piscacik had an RBI triple, while reliever Alan Snyder took the loss for the Indians (0-1).

Norwin 10, Ringgold 0: Chad Coles threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts as Norwin defeated Ringgold, 10-0, in a five-inning non-section opener.

Ryan Varley took the loss for the Rams (0-1). He reached base twice on walks. ZacK Byczynski had the lone hit for Ringgold.

Reno Rainey, Ramon Milke and Brad Lucas drove in two runs each for the Knights (1-0).
