C-H walks off with non-section victory
Kasey Scears drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning as Chartiers-Houston edged North Catholic, 8-7, in a wild, back-and-forth non-section high school girls softball game Tuesday.
Kaitlyn Dittrich got the win for the Bucs, striking out seven in a game that featured seven lead changes.
Macie Kesneck had three hits for the Bucs (1-1), while Scears drove in four runs for the Bucs.
Brooke Horton and Adrienne Nardone both had a double and triple for North Catholic (0-1).
McGuffey 4, Beth-Center 3: Winning pitcher Moriah McGuier hit a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and lift McGuffey to a 4-3 win over Beth-Center in a Section 2-AA game.
McGuier’s homer gave her three hits and two RBI in the game. She also had eight strikeouts. Rachel Kleinhans added a double for McGuffey (1-0, 3-0).
Abby Gustovich took the loss for Beth-Center (0-1, 0-1).
Waynesburg 14, Charleroi 13: Senior Taylor Staley hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to send Waynesburg to a 14-13 win over Charleroi in a Section 2-AA game at home.
Staley went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a triple, 5 RBI and was a double shy of the cycle. Junior Tara Staley and sophomore Sidney Hare also hit home runs for the Raiders (1-0, 1-0), who had 22 hits.
Senior shortstop Morgan Riley hit two home runs and had five RBI for the Cougars (0-1, 1-1).
Canon-McMillan 9, Mt. Lebanon 2: Six different players had multiple hits as Canon-McMillan open Section 4-AAAA play with a 9-2 win over Mt. Lebanon on the road.
Kirsten Rush went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Linda Rush had three hits with two runs and an RBI for the Big Macs (1-0, 1-0), who scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Kaylee Gohring earned the win.
Megan Dietrick went 3-for-3 for Mt. Lebanon (0-1, 0-1).
Belle Vernon 4, McKeesport 0: Sophomore pitcher Bailey Parshall finally got the run support she needed. The Penn State recruit struck out 17 and the Leopards scored their first runs of the season in a 4-0 win over McKeesport in a Section 3-AAA game at Washington Township Park.
Parshall allowed just four hits and her 17 strikeouts set a school record for a seven-inning game. Ashley Nichols struck out 19 in a 12-inning game in 2007. Parshall also had a double and an RBI for Belle Vernon (1-0, 1-2), which was scoreless in its first two games.
Ringgold 26, Oakland Catholic 7: Sophomore Taylor Mendicino hit three home runs and drove in six to propel Ringgold past Oakland Catholic, 26-7, in a five-inning non-section game on the road.
Mendicino went 4-for-4 with five runs and two walks. She led off the first and second innings with home runs and added a three-run shot in the top of the fourth for an eight-run lead for Ringgold (1-0), which had 24 hits. Five other Rams had at least three this, including junior Johnna Mocniak, who hit two home runs and drove in six.
Carmichaels 16, Washington 3: Laura Walker hit a three-run homer and struck out five as Carmichaels defeated Washington 16-3 in a six-inning Section 2-AA game on the road.
Megan Walker added a double and a triple for the Mikes (1-0, 1-1), who scored six runs in the sixth inning. Kieana Randolph had a triple for the Prexies (0-1, 0-1).
West Greene 15, Clay-Battelle 1: Madison Lampe had a double and triple, scored three runs and drove in three more as West Greene defeated Clay-Battelle, 15-1, in a five-inning non-section game.
Kaitlyn Rizor, Madison Renner and Lexie Mooney added triples for the Pioneers (2-0), while McKenna Lampe also doubled.
Renner picked up the win, striking out seven.
Caitlyn Kassay took the loss.
