Baseball: Carmichaels edges Brownsville, improves to 2-0

Josh Spishock went 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead Carmichaels to an 8-6 win over Brownsville in a non-section game Wednesday afternoon.

Jacob Wamsley had two hits and two RBI, Nick Mundel had a two-run single in the third to tie the game, 4-4, and Reed Long had two hits and three runs for the Mikes (2-0). Cody Brown doubled.

Matthew Barrish pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief for the win and Jacob Kinsell struck out three batters in one inning for the save.

Belle Vernon 4, Derry 2: Jesse Hartman’s two-run single in the top of the sixth inning lifted Belle Vernon to a 4-2 non-section win over Derry.

Jacob Callaway threw five innings of tw-hit ball and Matt Benicky did not allow a hit in the final two innings to earn the win. Tim Labuda doubled for the Leopards (2-0).

Losing pitcher Zack Blystone doubled for Derry (0-2).

California 11, Beth-Center 0: California moved its record to 3-0 with an 11-0 victory over Beth-Center in a non-section game.

Alex Adams went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, three runs and three stolen bases to power the Cal offense. The Trojans scored six runs in the first inning and took advantage of eight B-C errors.

Cal’s Casey Zajicek had two hits and scored two runs, and Enzo Mariscotti had two hits. Starting pitcher Nate Luketich and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout.

The game was the season opener for Beth-Center. Jake Knizner hit a double for the Bulldogs.

Chartiers Valley 12, Waynesburg 2: Dante Panucci homered and drove in three runs as Chartiers Valley defeated Waynesburg, 12-2, in five innings in a non-section game.

Konner Corchado and Brady Gulakowski each doubled for Chartiers Valley (2-1), while Ross Wilkerson scattered four hits in five innings to earn the win.

Bradon Turcheck had two of the hits for the Raiders (1-1).

Ambridge 6, Ringgold 1: Travis Holman and Brandon Venezia combined on a no-hitter as Ambridge defeated Ringgold, 6-1, in a non-section game.

Holman went five innings and struck out seven, while Venezia pitched the final two innings, adding two more strikeouts for Ambridge (1-1).

Bo Haines scored the lone run for Ringgold (0-2), with Connor Garry recording the RBI. Zack Byczynski took the loss.

South Fayette 9, Seton-La Salle 2: Tristan Tinney struck out 11 in six innings and also tripled as South Fayette topped Seton-La Salle, 9-2, in a non-section game.

Spencer Barber went 5-5 with a triple and four RBI for the Lions (1-2).

Nico Popa took the loss for Seton-La Salle (0-1).

Mapletown 6, Geibel Catholic 5: Pat Clites allowed two runs in five innings as Mapletown defeated Geibel Catholic, 6-5, in a non-section game.

Garrett Kiger tripled for the Maples (1-1) and also picked up a save, while Shawn Hennessey doubled in the win.

Kyle Toth struck out eight in a complete game for Geibel (0-1).

Bentworth 11, Burgettstown 3: Hunter Neely went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored twice to spark Bentworth to an 11-3 win over Burgettstown in a nonsection game.

Taylor Bunner and Nick Silver each had two RBI and Riley Nickerson struck out six to pick up the win. Rob Schultz doubled and drove in two runs and Jake Maimone had a double for the Bearcats (1-1).

Alex Takacs doubled for the Blue Devils (1-2).
