Baseball: Fort Cherry’s Douglas throws 1-hitter
Fort Cherry’s Hunter Douglas came within one out of tossing a no-hitter Tuesday in a 2-1 victory over South Side Beaver in a Section 2-AA game.
Douglas struck out three and walked two for the Rangers (3-8, 6-9). Cam Schaub doubled in one run and Nate Higham singled in the other.
South Side Beaver fell to 9-6, 6-6 in the section.
• Peters Township clinched a playoff berth out of Section 5-AAAA by defeating host Upper St. Clair 13-4 late Monday night.
Coastal Carolina recruit Tor Sehnert had another huge game at the plate for PT (8-3, 10-6) by going 3-for-3 with a triple, home run, four RBI and four runs.
Dax Plaskina had a memorable first start of the season as he reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with a double and getting hit by two pitches. Alex Mundy had a double, two runs and two RBI.
Eric Riotto was the winning pitcher, striking out six and not issuing a walk.
The Indians can still win the section and finish as low as third place in the section. PT hosts Canon-McMillan in the section finale tonight at Peterswood Park.
• Blake Rohrbacher hit a two-run homer and drove in four as Trinity overpowered visiting Carlynton 11-4 in a non-section game.
Trinity (6-11) overcame a 2-0 by scoring three times in the second, third and fourth innings. Logan Ferguson, who was 2-for-3 and scored two runs, had a two-run triple in the third inning and Rohrbacher blasted his home run to left field in the fourth.
Winning pitcher Ryan Piecknick gave up three hits over five innings. Piecknick and Tyler Denman each doubled for the Hillers.
Courtney Mickens doubled for Carlynton (3-13).
• In other games, Canon-McMillan moved into third place and the final playoff spot from Section 5-AAAA with a 3-0 victory over section leader Bethel Park. In a non-section game, Cameron (W.Va.) edged host West Greene, 6-5. No details of these games were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
