Baseball: Belle Vernon gets 10th section win

Belle Vernon concluded its section play Wednesday with a 13-1 victory over Elizabeth Forward in five innings at Wylie Field in Elizabeth.

Belle Vernon (10-4, 14-4), which finishes as the runner-up in Section 4-AA, scored nine runs over the first three innings. Seven different Leopards drove in at least one run. Josh Hoffman doubled and had three RBI, and Justin Ivill drove in three runs. Tim Labuda doubled and drove in two runs, Deven Judy doubled and scored three times, and Jacob Callaway doubled.

Winning pitcher Joel Engstrom tossed a three-hitter.

Elizabeth Forward (1-11, 1-14) has lost 10 in a row.

• Section 1-A champion California scored 13 runs in the top of the fourth inning and defeated Mapletown, 15-0.

Nathan Zemany had two and drove in two runs for California (9-1, 15-2). Derrick Hammitt had a single and drove in four runs.

Rico Strimmell was the winning pitcher as the Trojans held Mapletown (0-8, 1-10) to only one hit.

• Charleroi erased an early 3-0 deficit by doing all its scoring over the final four innings to defeat host Frazier 10-4 in Section 2-AA.

Charleroi (6-4, 9-5) remains in third place in the section, 1½ games ahead of fourth-place Beth-Center for the final playoff berth.

• Nick Cook had three hits and drove in five runs to propel Fort Cherry to a 15-6 win over Burgettstown in a Section 1-A game.

Austin Wood, Anthony Campian and Cole Clark doubled for the Rangers (5-8, 8-9). Alex Tacas had three RBI for the Blue Devils (1-11, 2-14).

• Gage Clark struck out 13 to help Jefferson-Morgan defeat West Greene 5-1 in a Section 1-A game.

Issac Dean and Brandon Kozich both had RBI doubles for the Rockets (3-6, 6-8). Dillon Shields had nine strikeouts for the Pioneers (3-6, 4-9).

• Beth-Center came back from an early five-run deficit but fell 8-6 to Brownsville in a Section 2-AA game at Ross Memorial Park.

Josh Davidson was the winning pitcher for the Falcons (12-0, 14-3), who have lost only one section game in two years. Brownsville scored five runs in the first and one in the second, but Beth-Center tied the score with a four-run third inning. The Falcons added one run in the fourth and fifth innings.

Dom Fundy was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI for B-C (5-6, 5-8).
