W.Va. Wesleyan eliminates California

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Anna Eggleston drove in two runs and Sayaka Foley threw 6 2/3 innings of one-run relief as host West Virginia Wesleyan defeated California, 5-3, in the finals of the NCAA Atlantic 1 Regional college women’s softball tournament Saturday.

The Vulcans, who finish their season at 38-6, had reached the final by defeating Bloomsburg, 5-1, and West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1 in 10 innings, earlier in the day to force the final game.

California, seeded fourth in the regional, struck for two runs in the first inning against Wesleyan starter Alyssa Shawgo, but Meghan Uher allowed three of the first four batters she faced to reach base – on two hits and a walk – before giving way to ace Alex Sagl.

Sagl lasted just an inning, allowing three runs, falling to 16-4 this season. The senior finished her career with a 90-16 record and a 1.56 ERA.

Emily Price and Erica Vallecorsa both doubled in the game for California.

Price’s two-run, two-out single scored Vallecorsa and Courtney Sinclair in the first game against top-seeded West Virginia Weslyan, which had scored a run of its own in the top of the 10th to break a scoreless tie.

Freshman Taylor Roblee allowed six hits in 9 1/3 innings, while Uher got the final two outs to get the win.

Hannah Vet took the loss, allowing two unearned runs in 9 2/3 innings.

Sagl got the win against Bloomsburg to push the Vulcans into the championship round. scattering six hits. Jacquelyn Fowler homered for California in the game, collecting three hits and driving in three runs.
