Baseball: Waynesburg’s Resnik becomes PAC’s all-time winningest pitcher
Senior right-handed pitcher Brian Resnik threw a four-hit shutout to become the Presidents’ Athletic Conference all-time wins leader and the Yellow Jackets’ baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Westminster, 7-0 and 7-2, Sunday afternoon.
Waynesburg (15-9, 15-22) made a late-season push at making the PAC tournament but the Yellow Jackets were eliminated earlier in the day when W&J defeated Thomas More. Waynesburg finished in a tie for fourth place in the PAC standings with Grove City (15-9, 25-14) but the Wolverines received the final spot in the tournament based on a sweep of the season series against Waynesburg.
Resnik, a Burgettstown graduate, allowed only a double and three singles to Westminster (6-18, 9-28). He did not issue a walk and struck out nine to improve his season record to 7-4 and career mark to 29-15. The 29 wins breaks the PAC record held by former W&J standout Eddie Nogay.
Resnik struck out 86 batters this season and issued only 10 walks in 82 2/3 innings.
Waynesburg gave Resnik all the support he needed during the first inning, when Jon Kletzli’s single gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Kletzli was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Matt Bensinger also doubled.
Bensinger hit a two-run homer and scored twice in the second game to back the winning pitching of Luke Carter, who threw a complete game. Carter struck out four and did not issue a walk.
