W&J adding 5 to Athletic Hall of Fame
Washington & Jefferson College has announced its 18th Athletic Hall of Fame class and the five new members will be inducted Sept. 9 in a ceremony at the Rossin Campus Center Allen Ballroom.
The members of the class are Todd Fry ’03 (football/track & field), Regina (Dixon) Maddox ’99 (basketball), Sam Mann ’07 (baseball), Todd Pivnick ’94 (football) and Guinn (Hebrank) Willochell ’00 (volleyball).
“Our hall of fame committee is extremely pleased to announce this wonderful group of former student-athletes for induction into the W&J Athletic Hall of Fame,” said athletic director Scott McGuinness. “These talented individuals are record-breakers and standard-bearers who made a mark on this campus both on the field and in the classroom. We can’t wait to celebrate together as a W&J family in September.”
Fry was a two-sport standout who established school records in both football and track & field. Fry finished his career as the W&J pass reception leader with 186 (now ranks third), including a school-record 94 grabs in 2001 which remains the single-season mark. He had 3,042 receiving yards and was a 2001 HP First Team All-American. In 2002, became the first W&J athlete to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. The sprinter was the 2000 PAC Track & Field MVP.
Dixon Maddox scored 1,399 points, which ranked third in school history upon graduation. A three-time first team All-PAC selection, Maddox held the W&J record for career three-pointers with 116 (now 5th in school history). She also ranks seventh with 283 assists. Maddox was a member of two PAC championship teams, including the 1997-98 squad, which was second women’s basketball team in W&J history to earn a NCAA tournament bid.
Mann and his classmates built the foundation for W&J baseball to become a perennial contender in Division III. Mann established nearly every pitching record in the W&J record book during his four years on campus. The 2007 ABCA/Rawlings Division III Mideast Player of the Year and PAC Player of the Year posted the nation’s 11th-best batting average (.463) as a senio, while also leading the team and the PAC in hits (68) and ERA (1.99). He had a 26-14 pitching record with 26 complete games and held a 2.21 ERA in 293 2/3 innings. He also excelled in the classroom and was honored as a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American.
Pivnick was a key offensive lineman during the most successful stretch of football in W&J history. A guard, Pivnick was honored on the Champion USA First Team All-America squad in 1992 after helping W&J to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. A three-time All-PAC pick, Pivnick opened holes for Hall of Famer Chris Babirad, who rushed for more than 5,700 career yards. Pivnick won four PAC championships and made four appearances in the NCAA playoffs.
Hebrank Willochell ’00 ranks among the top five players (side-out scoring era) in four different statistical categories, including the Presidents’ career kills leader with 1,041. She is second in school history with 224 aces, fourth with 807 digs and fifth with 249 blocks. W&J won four-straight PAC titles during her career and back-to-back ECAC Division III titles. The 1999 PAC MVP did not lose a conference match until her senior year (25 straight wins) and her teams had a 98-35 record (30-2 PAC).
The induction ceremony is part of Hall of Fame Weekend Sept. 9-10. The 2016 hall of fame class will be introduced at halftime of the W&J-Grove City football game at Cameron Stadium.
