EF holds off South Fayette in first-round game

Tenth-seeded Elizabeth Forward five extra-base hits, including a solo homer by Taylor Ludwick, and held on for a 5-4 win over seventh-seeded South Fayette in a WPIAL Class AAAA first-round game at California University’s Lilley Field Wednesday afternoon.

Cassidy Kern went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Warriors (12-5), who will play the winner of Yough and Ambridge at a site and time to be determined.

Delaney Ging went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Emily Bryan hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Lions (14-5).

Deer Lakes 6, Carmichaels 0: Deer Lakes second baseman Stephanie Drapela had two hits and drove in four runs as Deer Lakes defeated Carmichaels 6-0 in a WPIAL Class AA first-round playoff game at Hampton High School, clinching the Lancers’ sixth straight trip to the quarterfinals.

Drapela had a single and a triple, while Maureen Hutchinson also had two hits and drove in a run for second-seeded Deer Lakes (16-4). The No. 15 Mikes (11-9) only had two hits.
