114 points, no threes for Cal women
The California University women’s basketball team accomplished quite a feat Wednesday night.
The eighth-ranked Vulcans defeated West Virginia State, 114-83, in a non-conference game.
Without scoring a three-point basket.
And without attempting one either.
The 114 points came on two-point field goals and one-point free throws.
That’s how the Vulcans improved to 3-0 this season while scoring an average of 93.3 points per game. Cal has scored at least 100 points twice in its last 14 games dating back to last year after previously not reaching the century mark since the 2012-13 season.
The Yellow Jackets fell to 1-2 overall with both losses coming against teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year.
Senior Precious Martin recorded her fourth career double-double, finishing with team-highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds (11 offensive). She made 11 of 23 attempts from the floor and scored 18 of her 24 points in the second and third quarters.
Classmate Lana Doran scored 23 points on 11 of 22 shooting while adding eight rebounds and seven assists. Junior Seairra Barrett finsihed with 21 points and nine rebounds, and senior Miki Glenn had 20 points, nine assists and five steals.
Sophomores Morgan Jennings and Abbey Sporio each scored 10 points off the bench. Sporio also collected six rebounds, five assists and five steals in a career-high 31 minutes.
WVSU freshman Sydney Bates led all players with 24 points after shooting 9 of 16 from the floor, including four of seven from beyond the arc. Senior Shealyn Shafer added 15 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks in the loss.
The Vulcans return to action this weekend with a pair of road contests to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover play, beginning Saturday against Kutztown (1 p.m. tipoff).
