Cal women win and men lose to Mansfield

The eighth-ranked California University women’s basketball team allowed just two points in the second quarter and 13 points in the first half Sunday afternoon in a 73-37 win at Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover play.

The Vulcans improve to 5-0 overall. The 37 points are the fewest scored by a Cal opponent since Nov. 2010: 28 points against Molloy. The Mountaineers fall to 1-2..

Junior Seairra Barrett led the Vulcans in scoring for the second-straight day and posted her third-consecutive 20-point game. She finished with 21 points after shooting 9 of 10 from the floor and three of five from the free-throw line. Barrett also collected nine rebounds and had three steals in just 23 minutes.

Freshman Gina Vallecorsa added 13 points off the bench after making all five of her attempts from the field. Senior guard Miki Glenn poured in 11 points, had five rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Sophomore Emily Suckling scored seven points off the bench, while teammate Abbey Sporio scored five points, had five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Junior Brielle Kelly led Mansfield with nine points, while teammate Alyssa Mullins finished with eight points, four rebounds and two steals.

Mansfield 73, California 70: Mansfield junior Malik Carter finished with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field to lead Mansfield to a 73-70 victory over California Sunday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover action.

Carter also tied for the team lead with six rebounds and added four assists and three steals in 38 minutes. Fellow junior Jahyde Gardiner poured in 17 points and grabbed four rebounds for Mansfield (3-2).

Cal (2-3) had four players in double figures, including 18 points from junior Luka Andjusic.

Junior forward Tony Richardson added 14 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Daniel Sapp scored 11 points, had four rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes of action. Freshman guard Ramon Creighton finished with 10 points in the loss.
