Waynesburg rallies and steals win at Frostburg

Jon Knab’s driving layup with 46 seconds remaining gave Waynesburg the lead and capped the yellow Jackets’ late comeback as they rallied to defeat host Frostburg State 67-66 Tuesday night.

Frostburg State (1-4) led by 16 points with less than eight minutes remaining, and 61-49 with less than five minutes to play. However, Waynesburg (1-1) outscored the Bobcats 18-5 down the stretch to pull out the stunning victory.

A 10-0 Waynesburg run, capped by a layup by Knab with 2:26 to play pulled the Yellow Jackets to within 61-59. A three-point by point guard Timmy Kaiser with 1:58 remaining trimmed Frostburg’s lead to a single point at 63-62, and Waynesburg finally took the lead when Christian Koroly made a three-point shot with 1:18 to play, putting the yellow jackets on top 65-63.

Frostburg State’s Michael Tyler tied the score at 65-65 by working into the lane for a basket, but Knab field goal put Waynesburg ahead for good. Tyler, who led FSU with 15 points, made one of two free throws with 15 seconds left to make it a one-point game.

Waynesburg had several chances to put the game out of reach but missed four consecutive free throws in the final minute. The Yellow Jackets were only 15 of 31 at the foul line, but Frostburg State wasn’t much better, converting only 25 of 42 free throws.

Knab led three Waynesburg players in double figures with 15 points. Koroly followed with 14 points and Kaiser scored 11 and contributed eight assists.

Ashland 80, California 67: Ben Haraway led a balanced attack with 17 points, Nick Bapst made five three-point shots and Ashland used a strong start to the second half to defeat visiting California, 80-67.

The loss was the third straight for California (2-4), which trailed by only 35-32 at halftime.

Ashland (4-1) led 40-37 early in the second half when the Eagles went on a 20-4 run to open a 20-point advantage.

Bapst scored 15 points for Ashland, Boos Osborne had 14 and Marsalis Hamilton 10.

Freshman guard Ramon Creighton scored a game-high 20 points for Cal. Mick Miller followed with 14 and Daniel Sapp scored 11 and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Juniata 85, Wash & Jeff 59:

Marcus Lee led three Juniata players in double figures with 16 points and the Eagles used as 24-1 run in the first half to cruise to an 85-59 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson.

W&J (0-4) led 21-11 with 12:23 remaining in the first half before Juniata (2-0) put together its 24-1 run that opened a 35-13 lead. The Presidents went more than six minutes between field goals and were never able to recover as they trailed 45-18 at halftime.

Brandon Martinazzi scored 15 points and Trevor Clune came off the bench to tally 10 for Juniata, which shot 58 percent.

The Presidents were led by Sean Stinelli, who scored a game-high 17 points and made four three-pointers. Brian Graytok scored 13 points

Women’s results

Wash & Jeff 82, Allegheny 56: Taylor Cortazzo led four Washington & Jefferson players in double figures with 14 points and the Presidents defeated Allegheny 82-56 at Henry Memorial Center.

W&J (2-1) sued two big runs in the first half to forge a 42-19 halftime lead. The Presidents held Allegheny (1-3) to only five points in the second quarter.

Cortazzo scored five points in an 11-0 W&J run that opened a 16-5 advantage. Late in the second quarter, the Presidents went on a 12-0 run to push their lead to 42-16. Danielle Parker, who finished with 12 points, scored five during the late first-half run.

Danni Medovich and Amirah Moore each scored 10 points for W&J, which has won two in a row. Parker grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

Allegheny played 14 players but only Zoe Soilis, with 11 points, scored more than eight. The Gators shot only 22 percent from the field for the game. In the first half, the W&J defense held Allegheny to a miserable 12.2-percent shooting performance, which included 7.4-percent from inside the three-point line.

Carnegie Mellon 77, Waynesburg 64: Lisa Murphy scored a game-high 26 points and Carnegie Mellon remained undefeated with a 77-64 victory over Waynesburg at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Murphy made 10 of 12 shots from the field and the Tartans (4-0) scored the final 11 points of the first half to take a 39-29 lead. CMU held Waynesburg (2-2) scoreless for a 5½-minute stretch.

Addy Knetzer had another big game for Waynesburg with 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Katie Gehlmann followed with 19 points that included five three-point field goals.
