Boys soccer: Benson scores 3 as Waynesburg blanks McGuffey
Waynesburg shut out McGuffey, 6-0, Tuesday in a 3-AA match.
Gavin Benson had a hat trick for the Raiders (8-1, 10-1) with additional goals by Daniel Layton, Blake Brewer and Nate Blair. The Highlanders (3-6-1, 3-7-1) forced McGuffey goalkeeper Scott Benco into only two saves.
• Steven Horvath scored a hat trick, one goal in the first half and two in the second, to guide Chartiers-Houston past Beth-Center 3-0 in Section 4-A.
Tom Dzadovsky made four saves for the Bucs (3-8, 4-10) against the Bulldogs (3-8, 3-9-1).
• Bentworth led throughout in a 11-3 victory over California in Section 4-A. Joe Costello scored three goals, and Blaine Fowler and Wyatt Selvoski each had two.
The Bearcats (9-1-1, 11-2-1) used two goalies against the Trojans (2-9, 2-10) who combined for five saves.
In other matches, Peters Township defeated Bethel Park 3-2 in Section 2-AAAA, Canon-McMillan lost 3-2 to Mt. Lebanon in 2-AAAA, Ringgold lost to Laurel Highlands 3-2 in Section 3-AAA and Belle Vernon was a 4-1 winner over Trinity in 3-AAA. No match details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
