Soccer: Waynesburg wraps up first section title since 1996
WAYNESBURG – Gavin Benson scored three goals as Waynesburg wrapped up the Section 3-AA title by defeating Washington, 12-0, in a high school soccer match Thursday night.
Jon Sakai added a pair of goals and six other players had a single goal for the Raiders (9-1, 11-1), who wrapped up their first section title since 1996. Washington falls to 0-10, 0-12.
• Three second half goals broke a scoreless tie at halftime and sent Bentworth past Bishop Canevin 3-0 in Section 4-1.
The win clinches second place for the playoff-bound Bearcats, who got two goals from Levi Jordan and one from Joe Costello. Will Bashioum made eight saves.
Bishop Canevin fell to 6-8, 5-7 in the section.
• Peters Township and Upper St. Clair battled to a 0-0 tie in a double=overtime match in Section 2-AAAA.
The Indians (5-1-1, 9-1-3) had one shot on Mack Dominick. Justin Gamble made nine saves.
Upper St. Clair is 7-1-1 in the section, 9-3-1 overall.
• Logan Mowl had three goals as Trinity clinched a playoff spot in Section 3-AAA with a 3-1 win over Uniontown. Sam Day got the win in goal for the Hillers (4-5, 4-8). David Eitner scored for Uniontown (1-8, 2-12).
• Brandon Byer scored with two minutes remaining to lift Canon-McMillan to a 2-1 Section 2-AAAA win over Bethel Park. Zack Russo also scored for the Big Macs (4-4, 8-5).
Dominic Galetta scored for Bethel Park (3-5, 4-8-1).
• Jared Renz had three goals and Matt Cillo had two as South Fayette defeated West Mifflin, 8-0, in a Section 4-AAA match.
Ken Locher and Dan Rodgers combined for the shutout for the Lions (5-4, 6-8-1). West Mifflin is 2-7, 3-10-1.
• Noah Davidson’s first-half goal was all that was needed as Chartiers-Houston defeated California, 1-0, in a Section 4-A match.
Tom Dzadovsky recorded the shutout for the Bucs (4-8, 5-10). California is 2-11 (2-10).
Mosoluke Obiri and Marissa Schueckman had two goals each as Seton-La Salle defeated Chartiers-Houston, 5-1, in a Section 2-A match.
Alyssa Daugherty scored for the Bucs (6-4, 7-7). Seton-La Salle is now 7-2, 8-4.
