Girl soccer: Canon-Mac repeats as 2-AAAA champion
Canon-McMillan secured its second straight section 2-AAAA title with a 4-2 win Monday night over Bethel Park.
It’s only the school’s second section title since 1991.
The Big Macs (8-0-1, 13-0-1) avenged a 2-2 tie against the Black Hawks (2-6-1, 3-10-2) earlier in the season. Aideen O’Donoghue had two goals, and Sabrina Bryan and Cheyenne Trest each scored one.
Goalkeeper Megan Virgin made eight saves.
C-M had a 2-0 lead at halftime, but Bethel Park scored two unanswered goals when play resumed to draw even midway through the period. Canon-Mac pulled ahead for good onwo late goals in quick succession.
• Belle Vernon defeated Elizabeth Forward 3-1 in a Section 2-AAA match.
Belle Vernon (7-1-2, 8-5-2) took a second-half lead, breaking a 1-1 halftime tie, after goals by Sierra Lynn and Lexi Demko. Demko scored BV’s first-half goal.
• Southmoreland’s Olivia Porter had a hat trick but it didn’t matter as Waynesburg got as much from Madison Clayton and more from other players, prevailing 6-3 in a Section 3-AA match.
Jillian Kijowski, Bailey Fudala and Kaley Pell proved to be the difference for the Raiders (9-1, 13-2) with a goal apiece.
The Raiders’ Emily McCarty made four saves. Waynesburg plays at Yough Wednesday for the section title.
