Girls soccer: Waynesburg wins first section title; C-M finishes unbeaten in 2-AAAA

Waynesburg won its first girls soccer section championship Wednesday night when the Raiders blanked host Yough 4-0 to capture the 3-AA title.

Madison Clayton scored two goals and assisted on another as Waynesburg improved its record to 10-1 in the section and 14-2 overall.

Jillian Kijowski scored a goal on a penalty kick and Kylie Sinn also tallied a goal. Bailey Fudala and Kaley Pell were credited with assists on the Clayton goals.

Goalkeeper Emily McCarty blanked Yough (7-4, 8-6), the second-place team in the section, by making six saves.

Waynesburg has one match remaining in the regular season, Monday against McGuffey at home, where the Raiders are undefeated.

• Aideen O’Donoghue and Sabrina Bryan each scored a second-half goal as Canon-McMillan held off host Peters Township 3-2 in a Section 2-AAAA match.

Canon-McMillan (9-0-1, 14-0-1), which had already clinched the section title, finished undefeated in league play for the second consecutive year. The Big Macs extended their winning streak to eight in a row and defeated arch-rival Peters Township (5-4, 9-5-1) for the fifth consecutive time. Entering Wednesday, Canon-McMillan and defending WPIAL Class AAA champion Norwin (14-0-1) were the only undefeated teams in Class AAAA.

C-M’s Addie Roman was credited with the only goal of the first half after Maddie Whipple sent a kick into the box and the ball was eventually misplayed by PT for an own goal. O’Donoghue made it 2-0 early in the second half but Lindsey Pendergast made it 2-1 in the 46th minute. The Big Macs pushed their lead back two a pair of goals moments later when Bryan tallied, but PT pulled to within 3-2 on a goal by Regan LaVigna with 28 minutes remaining.

• Undefeated Bentworth clinched at least a share of the Section 2-A championship by rolling over Chartiers-Houston, 8-1.

Paige Marshalek, with three goals, and Jocelyn Timlin, with two tallies, led the charge for Bentworth, which improved to 10-0 in section and 13-0 overall. The Bearcats have a 1 1/2-game lead over second-place Seton-La Salle. Chartiers-Houston its in third place at 7-5, 8-9.

Shayla Rokicki, Beatrice Kosell and Rori Schreiber each scored one goal for Bentworth.

• Lexi Demko scored three goals and Sierra Lynn had two first-half tallies as Belle Vernon crushed Uniontown 8-1 in Section 2-AAA.

Keelie Selvoski, Marissa Grubbs and Jullian McCullough also scored Belle Vernon (8-1-2, 9-5-2), which moved into a tie for first place in the section with Mt. Pleasant, which lost 1-0 to Laurel Highlands.

• South Fayette received two goals from Jayna Fittipaldo and defeated Blackhawk 4-0 in Section 4-AAA. Brenna McGuire and Madison Burnside also scored goals, and keeper Samantha Dolena registered the shutout as the Lions improved to 6-4-1 in section and 8-6-1 overall.

• West Mifflin edged Trinity 2-0 in a Section 3-AAA match at Hiller Field. Trinity is 2-10, 4-10.
