Thomas More snaps Waynesburg’s streak
WAYNESBURG – C.T. Tarrant ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns and Thomas More, the No. 17-ranked team in NCAA Division III, scored 30 second-half points en route to a 40-7 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium.
Thomas More (5-0, 6-1), the PAC leader, led 7-0 in the final minute of the second quarter before kicking a field goal on the final play of the first half and getting two short touchdown runs from Tarrant in a 21-point third quarter.
The Saints rushed for 350 yards (7.3 per attempt) and had 593 total yards. Waynesburg (2-3, 2-5), which had its two-game winning streak end, was held to 29 rushing yards and the Yellow Jackets’ only points came from its special teams.
Thomas More took a 7-0 lead on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Brenan Kuntz to Daylin Garland in the first quarter. Kuntz completed 18 of 24 passes for 230 yards and also ran for a touchdown.
Cole Mathias’ 34-yard field goal gave Thomas More a 10-0 edge at halftime. Tarrant’s three-yard run early in the third quarter made it 17-0, but Waynesburg’s Ta’Vaughn Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to pull the yellow Jackets back to within 10 points.
Less than two minutes later, Kuntz scored on a 20-yard scamper, and Tarrant’s three-yard run late in the third quarter made the score 31-7.
Waynesburg quarterback Tyler Perone completed 17 of 31 passes for 272 yards. Tim Cooper caught four passes for 80 yards and Kevin Barnes had seven receptions for 76 yards.
