Undefeated C-M girls No. 2 seed in soccer playoffs
Undefeated Canon-McMillan is the No. 2 seed for the WPIAL Class AAAA girls soccer playoffs that begin with preliminary round games Saturday and first-round contests Monday night.
Pairings for the boys and girls playoffs were released Wednesday afternoon by the WPIAL. The boys playoffs begin in all four classifications Saturday.
Canon-McMillan (15-0-1), the Section 2 champion, was given the No. 2 seed behind top-seeded Norwin (16-0-1), the Section 4 champion. The Big Macs begin postseason play at home Monday against Hempfield (4-9-2). If Canon-McMillan advances, the Big Macs have a potential matchup with Section 2 rival Peters Township in the quarterfinals. The Indians play at Seneca Valley in the opening round.
Bentworth (15-1), the Section 2 champion, was given the No. 2 seed in Class A. The Bearcats received a bye in the first round and will not play until the quarterfinals Oct. 27 against the winner of a first-round matchup between Mohawk and South Side Beaver.
In Class AAA, Belle Vernon will play Thomas Jefferson at Mt. Pleasant and South Fayette faces Oakland Catholic at Montour.
Waynesburg (15-2), the Section 2 champion, is the No. 3 seed in Class AA. The Raiders have a bye in the opening round and will play either Charleroi or Burrell in the quarterfinals Oct. 27.
Beth-Center makes its Class A playoff debut Saturday in a preliminary round game against Sewickley Academy at Moon (1 p.m.). If the Bulldogs win, then they get top-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic in the first round Monday.
In another Class A first-round game, Chartiers-Houston plays OLSH at Canon-McMillan (6 p.m.).
Nine local boys teams qualified for the postseason including Peters Township and Canon-McMillan in Class AAAA. The third-seeded Indians host Central Catholic and the Big Macs play at Plum.
Four local squads, including Trinity, will be in the Class AAA tournament. The Hillers open at top-seeded Montour. Belle Vernon hosts West Allegheny, Ringgold is at third-seeded Mars and South Fayette is at Moon.
Section 3 champion Waynesburg is the No. 4 seed in Class AA and will play Mt. Pleasant at Laurel Highlands in the first round. Charleroi, the No. 8 seed, plays Deer Lakes at Belle Vernon.
Bentworth is the only local team in the Class A playoffs. The Bearcats play Trinity Christian at Upper St. Clair.
Boys quarterfinals will be played Wednesday at sites and times to be determined.
Championships games will be played Nov. 3-5 at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.
