Titans knock off Presidents
NEW WILMINGTON – Westminster rushed for 233 yards and recorded three interceptions as the Titans stunned visiting Washington & Jefferson, 16-10 Saturday afternoon in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference college football game.
Dominique McKinley had 24 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Paul Columbo added 107 yards on 16 carries for Westminster (4-1, 6-1), helping the Titans to a 35:25-24:35 advantage in time of possession.
W&J (3-2, 5-2) managed just 71 rushing yards on 29 carries, a 2.4 average, while quarterback Pete Coughlin had 191 yards passing, completing 17 of 31 attempts with three interceptions. Coughlin was sacked five times.
Westminster, whose only loss came to Thomas More, intercepted Coughlin on the game’s first play from scrimmage, as Gator Phillips picked off the pass to set up a Justin Dahl field goal for a 3-0 lead for the Titans.
Coughlin, however, ran for a 6-yard TD on W&J’s next possession to put the Presidents ahead, 7-3. But the lead was short-lived as McKinley scored from 13 yards out on Westminster’s ensuing drive to make it 10-7.
The Presidents moved the ball inside the Westminster 10 on their next possession, but Todd Jeter intercepted Coughlin at the goal line to turn W&J away following a 72-yard drive.
Jeter returned the ball 25 yards and Columbo, who threw for 104 yards, broke off a 50-yard run to the W&J 10 before the Titans settled for a second Dahl field goal and a 13-7 lead they would take into the third quarter.
W&J trimmed the lead to 13-10 on a 29-yard Ted Ford field goal on its opening possession of the third quarter, but the Titans wouldn’t allow the Presidents to get any closer, adding a 40-yard field goal by Dahl with 6:13 remaining in the fourth quarter.
W&J drove to the Westminster 33 on its next possession, but Coughlin was sacked on third down to force a punt, and the Titans again intercepted Coughlin on the Presidents’ final drive to preserve the win.
