UNIONTOWN – If the Waynesburg High School boys soccer team was feeling too nervous heading into its first-round playoff match with Mount Pleasant, it didn’t take much to put them at ease.

Blake Brewer scored just over two minutes into the game and the Raiders tacked on another first-half goal en route to a 2-0 win over Mount Pleasant in a WPIAL Class AA first-round game.

The win was the first in the playoffs in school history.

“They were a little nervous before the game,” said Waynesburg head coach Matt Blair. “It’s a pretty big relief. We tried to keep things as routine as possible this week and it worked.”

The win was pretty routine for the Section 3-AA champions, who improved to 15-1.

After Brewer’s goal, Gavin Benson added another with two minutes remaining in the first half. Scott Venco made those stand, stopping all four Mt. Pleasant (9-8-1) shots he faced in goal.

The shutout was the 10th of the season for Waynesburg.
