Peters Township’s Kness in hunt for PIAA golf title

YORK – Peters Township senior Mia Kness shot a first-round 72 Monday to tie for first place after the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA golf championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort.

Kness had two birdies and two bogeys on both the front and back nine to match Conestoga sophomore Samantha Yao at even par.

They are both three-strokes ahead of the rest of the field heading into today’s final round.

Canon-McMillan junior Taylor Waller shot an 81 and is nine strokes off the lead.

In the Class AA boys tournament, Waynesburg’s Aaron Yorio is eight strokes behind leader Jason Li of Sewickley Academy. Li shot an even-par 72, while Yorio had a 79.

McGuffey’s duo of Hunter Donahue and Colin Chapman shot 82 and 84, respectively, while Bentworth’s Christian Sadler also had an 82.

In the Class AAA boys tournament, Hunter Bruce of Peters Township shot a first-round 82, placing him 13 strokes behind first-round leader Kevin Scherr of Nazareth.
