South Fayette upsets third-seeded Oakland Catholic

MONTOUR – Brenna McGuire and Lexie Keeling had second-half goals to break a scoreless tie at the half and lift South Fayette to a 2-0 upset win Monday in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA high school girls soccer playoffs.

McGuire’s goal was assisted by Helina Vanbibber, while Samantha Doleno had six saves in net to help the Lions (10-7-2) knock off third-seeded Oakland Catholic (15-3-1). Oakland Catholic, which tied South Park for the Section 3-AAA title, had not been shut out this season.

The Lions now face Montour, a winner Monday night over Chartiers Valley, in Thursday’s quarterfinals at a site and time to be determined.

Charleroi 3, Burrell 2: Charleroi knocked off Burrell, 3-2, in a Class AA game at Penn-Trafford.

The Cougars (11-6) advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals to face Section 3-AA champion Waynesburg at a site and time to be determined.

Charleroi, the fourth-place team out of Section 3-AA, lost both meetings with the Raiders this season, 3-2 and 3-0.

Burrell finishes 10-7.

Seneca Valley 3, Peters Township 2: Seneca Valley knocked Peters Township out of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs with a 3-2 win over the visiting Indians.

Seneca Valley advances to face Canon-McMillan in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Peters Township finishes its season at 10-6-3.

Thomas Jefferson 1, Belle Vernon 0: One goal was all that was needed for Thomas Jefferson to beat Section 2-AAA co-champion Belle Vernon.

Thomas Jefferson (14-5) advances to the quarterfinals to play top-seeded Moon.

Belle Vernon finishes its season at 10-7-2.
