W&J dominates 2nd half, beats Saint Vincent
Austin Kemp ran for three touchdowns, Pete Coughlin passed for two scores and ran for another, and Washington & Jefferson scored the final 27 points to defeat Saint Vincent 48-26 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
It was the 23rd consecutive home win for W&J (4-2, 6-2), which bounced back from a loss last week at Westminster.
Saint Vincent (2-4, 4-4) led 26-21 late in the first half behind four touchdown passes from quarterback Derek Stewart. The Presidents, however, took a 27-26 lead into halftime after Coughlin scored on a seven-yard run with 2:14 left in the second quarter.
Coughlin was W&J’s leading rusher with 126 yards on 18 carries. He also completed 15 of 20 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns to Jesse Zubik. Coughlin and Zubik connected on TDs of 17 and 18 yards in the second half, the latter giving W&J a 40-26 lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
Zubik finished with five catches for 59 yards and became the fourth W&J player with 3,000 career receiving yards.
Kemp, who rushed for 113 yards on 34 carries, capped the scoring with a one-yard plunge midway through the fourth quarter. Kemp had first-half TD runs of four and two yards.
Stewart completed 30 of 47 passes for 418 yards. He threw scoring passes of 56 and one yards to D.J. Oceant-Kelly, the latter giving the Bearcats the 26-21 lead. Stewart also had a 21-yard TD pass to Ryan Crawford and a 53-yarder to Damon Black.
