Turnovers derail Canon-McMillan’s bid to start 2-0
GREENSBURG – Justin Sliwoski ran for two touchdowns and passed for another Friday night to lead Hempfield to a 35-12 victory over visiting Canon-McMillan in the Class 6-A Southeastern Conference opener.
Sliwoski had TD runs for 28 and one yards, and threw a 48-yard scoring pass to Braden Brose that gave the Spartans (2-0) a 21-12 lead late in the first half.
Canon-McMillan (1-1) had pulled to within 14-12 in the second quarter when Jordan Castelli threw a 48-yard TD pass to Doug Kotar. Anthony Sacco had C-M’s first touchdown on a one-yard run.
Sacco rushed for 211 yards on 38 carries. Castelli completed 12 of 31 passes for 184 yards but was picked off three times. Isaiah DiAndreth returned an interception 57 yards for a score with 54 seconds remaining.
Canon-Mac outgained Hempfield 390-310 and had a 22-12 edge in first downs but couldn’t overcome four turnovers.
C-M Bryan Milligan, who led all Class AAAA players in rushing last season, was not in uniform. He was sidelined by an injury.
The Big Macs were trying to start 2-0 for the first time since 2003.
