Girls soccer: Canon-Mac beats defending PIAA champ on Thomas’ goal
The Canon-McMillan girls soccer team opened Section 2-AAAA play Monday night with a major statement, dispatching defending PIAA champion Upper St. Clair 3-2 in double overtime.
USC (0-1, 3-2) scored first in each half close to their midpoints, the goals coming from Mia Snyder and Breighan Scajnecki. But both times Sabrina Bryan answered for the Big Macs (1-0, 4-0).
The score remained tied 2-2 after 80 minutes, forcing overtime. With three minutes to go in the final additional period, Annabel Thomas collected a pass on the right side and beat a defender before placing a shot to the far post from just inside the box to end the game.
• Paige Marshalek scored three goals to power undefeated Bentworth to a 9-0 victory over host Monessen in Section 2-A.
Jocelyn Timlin contributed two goals for Bentworth (3-0, 5-0), which has outscored its opponents 32-4. Bea Kossel, Sarah Maniecki, Shayla Rokicki and Lindsay Davis each had one goal for the Bearcats, who play six of their next seven matches at home.
• Chartiers-Houston scored four second-half goals and defeated host Geibel catholic 4-1 in Section 2-A.
Madison Acor and Alyssa Daugherty each scored two goals for the Bucs, who won their first match of the season and improved to 1-2 in section and 1-4 overall.
• Autumn Heineman had a hat trick in the first half and South Fayette cruised to a 7-0 victory over Hopewell in Section 4-AAA.
Rachel Weis scored two goals, and Brenna McGuire and Jayna Fittapaldo each had one score as the Lions improved to 2-1 in the section and 4-1 overall. South Fayette led 5-0 at halftime. Hopewell is 1-2, 1-2.
• Charleroi took the first lead of its 3-AA match at Waynesburg and also found the net for the first goal after halftime, but the Raiders (2-0, 3-1) snagged victory with six minutes left in regulation on an Elise Benke effort. Abby Virgin had the assist. Madison Clayton put the hosts one up heading into the break with a pair of goals.
• A strong offense effort by Peters Township pushed the Indians (1-0, 3-1-1) past Baldwin in a 2-AAAA match, 2-1.
Though Peters Township managed 11 shots, Baldwin (0-1, 2-2) scored first when Haley Huber converted a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. An unassisted goal by Natalie Daube a few minutes after that effort and a second half finish by Hannah Stuck eventually gave Peters Township the section-opening win.
