Polish, Tucker edged in team archery event at Paralympics

Kevin Polish of Carmichaels and his American teammate Samantha Tucker were edged in the first round of the mixed team compound archery event Monday at the Paralympics Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Polish and Tucker lost to South Korea’s Lee Ouk Soo and Kim Mi Soon, 147-146.

Polish and Tucker, who is from Gordon, Neb., led 37-36 after the first round, shooting three 10s and a 7. Lee and Kim rallied in the second round with a 39-37 advantage. The Koreans added to their lead in the third round by outscoring the Americans 38-37. Polish and Tucker scored 8, 10, 9 and 10.

In the final round, Polish and Tucker had a 38-37 edge, scoring three 9s and an 8, but their comeback fell a point short.

Lee and Kim upset the top-seeded team from Iran in the quarterfinals before losing to Great Britain in the semifinals. The Koreans defeated a team from Turkey 138-128 to win the bronze medal.

Polish will be action again Wednesday, competing in the Open Compound elimination round against Thorsteinn Halldorsson of Iceland. It will be one of 16 elimination-round matches.
