Boys soccer: Costello, Selvoski combine for 5 as Bentworth rolls
Joe Costello and Wyatt Selvoski combined for five goals as Bentworth defeated visiting Monessen, 6-3, Saturday in a Section 4-A match.
Bentworth remains in second place in the section with a 6-1-1 record in league play and an 8-1-1 mark overall. Monessen is 1-7, 2-7.
The Bearcats led 3-0 at halftime and 6-0 in the second half as Costello scored three goals and Selvioski tallied a pair. Jake Davis had the other goal for Bentworth.
• Gavin Benson scored two goals and Waynesburg was a 4-1 winner at Charleroi in a Section 3-AA match. The Raiders lead the section at 6-1 and are 8-1 overall. Charleroi slipped to 4-3, 6-4.
• Goalkeeper Ben Popko got his first start of the season for Canon-McMillan and he finished it with a shutout as the Big Macs blanked Trinity, 3-0, in a non-section game at Hiller Field.
Brandon Byer, Noah French and Mackeyan Martin were the goal scorers for C-M (7-3). Trinity is 2-6.
• Chris Stack and Zach Straub each scored two goals as unbeaten Seton-La Salle defeated visiting Chartiers-Houston 5-0 in a Section 4-A match.
Luke Mallon also scored for Seton-La Salle (8-0, 10-0).Chartiers-Houston is 2-6, 2-8.
In other games, Yough edged McGuffey, 2-1, in Section 3-AA; Bishop Canevin was a 7-0 winner over California in Section 4-A; West Allegheny won a non-section matchup with visiting Ringgold, 5-1; Mt. Lebanon defeated South Fayette, 2-0. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
