Ken Griffey Sr. will return to his hometown of Donora this weekend as the town holds a “Griffey Celebration Weekend” Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend’s events will kick off from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday with an open house at Donora Municipal Building.

On Sunday, the city will dedicate Ken Griffey Sr. & Jr. Drive at the MIDA property at 1st street starting at noon. A light luncheon will immediately follow at Donora Municipal Building.

Ken Griffey Sr. was born in raised in Donora, graduating from Donora High School in 1969. He would go on to have a 19-year career in Major League Baseball, nine of which came with the Cincinnati Reds in the ’70s and early ’80s, batting .296 with 152 home runs and 859 RBI.

Griffey Jr., who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame this year, was born in 1969 in Donora, but soon followed his father as his professional career moved along.

The two spent time together on the same team in 1990, playing their first game together against Kansas City Aug. 31 of that season. Sept. 14, they became the only father-son duo to hit back-to-back homers in a game against the Angels.

Because of a prior commitment, Griffey Jr. is unable to attend the ceremony.
