High school softball: Canon-McMillan, Bethel Park combine for 10 home runs
The wind was blowing hard Tuesday and the balls were sailing out of the field at North Strabane Intermediate School at a record pace as Bethel Park won a homer-filled slugfest against Canon-McMillan, 20-14, in a Class 6-A Section 1 game.
Bethel Park (2-0, 2-0) had 16 hits, including four home runs. Canon-McMillan had 17 hits, including six homers, but the Big Macs committed four errors that led to eight unearned runs. Bethel Park, which led 11-9 after five innings, scored 12 runs over the final three innings, including seven in the seventh.
Colby Reid, Rachel Hankin, Abby Joyce, Ashley Burford and Shayna Postier each homered for the Black Hawks. Joyce and Postier each doubled.
Katelyn Greaves went 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBI for Canon-Mac. Erica Haught, the No. 8 hitter in the Big Macs’ lineup, homered twice and drove in five. She homered in both the fourth and fifth innings. Makenzie Hollie hit two home runs and had four RBI, and Lindsay Schmidt homered.
• Jessica Ford and Macie Kesneck each had three hits and drove in four runs as undefeated Chartiers-Houston overpowered Beth-Center 17-2 in a four-inning Section 3-AA game.
Chartiers-Houston (1-0, 6-0) led 7-1 after two innings and then broke open the game by scoring seven times in the third. Six of the Bucs’ 18 hits went for doubles as Ford, Kesneck, Kayla Alderson, Kaci Alderson, Lauren Lober and winning pitcher Kaitlyn Dittrich each hit a double. Dittrich allowed three hits over three innings.
Mackenzie Crile had a double for B-C (0-2, 0-2).
• Maddie Carr homered and Serra Catholic, sparked by a six-run second inning, defeated visiting California 14-6 in a non-section game.
Serra (1-1) had 12 hits, including four for extra bases. California (1-4) led 4-1 after one inning but the Trojans were held to two runs the rest of the way.
