Wild Things sign highly touted pitcher
The Wild Things announced Wednesday the signing of one of their most intriguing players in many years.
Washington signed Hunter Williams, a 21-year-old left-handed pitcher who most recently played for the University of North Carolina.
Williams, from Chesterfield, Va., made 16 starts for the Tar Heels over the last two years, his freshman and sophomore seasons. He had a 7-3 record and 2.42 ERA for North Carolina. Williams is not playing college baseball this season.
After both seasons at North Carolina, Williams played in the prestigious Cape Cod League, where he was named the league’s No. 16 prospect last summer after having a 2-2 record and 1.27 ERA in seven starts. Baseball America has rated Williams at No. 58 among all draft-eligible players for this June’s first-year player draft.
Williams was drafted in the 32nd round by the San Francisco Giants out of high school.
