High school softball roundup: Buggey bats Big Macs past Baldwin
Ashley Buggey, the No. 7 hitter in Canon-McMillan’s lineup, hit a grand slam and drove in six runs – all in the first two innings – and the Big Macs to a 10-1 victory over Baldwin in Class 6-A Section 1 Monday.
It was the first section loss for Baldwin (4-1, 4-2). Canon-McMillan (4-1, 4-1) won its third straight.
Buggey’s two-run single in the first inning gave Canon-McMillan a 3-0 lead. She hit a line-drive grand slam to center field that capped Canon-McMillan’s seven-run second inning and gave the Big Macs a 10-0 advantage.
Baldwin’s only run was a solo homer by losing pitcher Adeline Tagg in the fourth inning. Winning pitcher Abi Michelucci threw a four-hitter.
Julia Ciotti had three hits for Canon-McMillan and Lindsay Smith hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI. Kylah Kubiczki and Kayla Hopkins each doubled.
• Bailey Parshall and undefeated Belle Vernon prepared for a key showdown with Yough today by defeating Greensburg Salem 7-1 in a non-section game.
Parshall, a Penn State recruit, fired a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. She did walk three.
The win moves Belle Vernon to 8-0 overall. The leopards are 4-0 in Section 2-AAAA. Yough began Wednesday with a 3-0 mark in the section.
Parshall helped her cause by driving in three runs on three singles. Kaitlyn Carr had two RBI and Hanna Legazza had two hits.
• West Greene had 16 hits and cruised to its third Section 2-A win in as many days, beating host Jefferson-Morgan 17-1 in four innings.
Shelby Morris, Kaitlyn Rizor and Madison Renner each homered for West Greene (4-0, 9-0). Rizor also doubled, as did the Pioneers’ McKenna Lampe in support of winning pitching of Jade Renner.
Caitlyn Dugan and Krista McCartney each doubled for Jefferson-Morgan (0-4, 1-6).
• Leah Lindley pitched and hit Bentworth to a 9-0 victory over Burgettstown in a Section 3-AA game.
Lindley struck out four and walked none and went 3-for-3, doubled and drove in two runs. Chase Adams and Savannah Adams each had a double for the Bentworth (2-2, 5-5). Burgettstown fell to 2-3 and 2-7.
