High school softball roundup: Monessen’s Vatakis throws no-hitter
Dana Vatakis fired a seven-inning no-hitter as Monessen defeated California, 10-1, in a Section 2-A game Thursday.
Vatakis also led the Greyhounds (4-1, 5-1) at the plate, doubling twice and driving in three runs.
• Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Rizor allowed just one hit, striking out seven, as West Greene stayed unbeaten with a 15-0, four-inning Section 2-A victory over Avella.
Rizor also homered in the game for the Pioneers (5-0, 10-0), while Madison Lampe homered and doubled, driving in four runs. Madison Renner added two doubles and Mackenzie Carpenter also had a two-base hit for West Greene, which had 12 hits.
Avella falls to 0-5, 0-6.
• Gina Ranieri had three hits, including a triple, and Megan Walker also had three hits, as Carmichaels defeated Mapletown, 11-2, in a Section 2-A game.
Laura Walker got the win for the Mikes (4-1, 6-3), scattering seven hits while striking out eight.
Taylor Vanata had three hits for the Maples (2-3, 2-6), while Abby McIntyre took the loss.
• Hannah Batovsky collected three hits as Brownsville defeated Charleroi, 12-5, in a Section 3-AAA game.
Ashley Zosky, Alexis Zosky and Julie Lawson each recorded a double for Brownsville (1-4, 1-6).
Sam Mavilla and Hannah Kondratik each recorded two hits, while Ashley Smith took the loss for Charleroi (1-4, 1-5).
• Chartiers-Houston rebounded from its first loss of the season Wednesday, pounding out 17 hits against Fort Cherry, beating the Rangers, 21-1, in a three-inning Section 3-AA game.
Kayla Alderson hit two home runs and doubled, driving in four runs and scoring four times for the Bucs (3-1, 8-1).
Kaci Alderson doubled twice and drove in four and winning pitcher Karlyn Bayer and Brittany Blumen also doubled and Lauren Lober tripled.
Kayla Salvini had double for the Rangers (0-3, 3-3).
• Bentworth rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to defeat Beth-Center, 10-9, in a Section 3-AA game.
Leah Lindley recorded the win for Bentworth (3-2, 5-6), as she helped her own cause with a double. Savannah Adams and Zalie Skolyak each recorded a double.
Mackenzie Crile doubled for Beth-Center (0-4, 0-5).
• Rachel Eisenheimer drove in three runs – two on a first-inning triple – and Waynesburg did all of its scoring in the first two innings to defeat visiting McGuffey 7-4 in Section 3-AAA.
Waynesburg (4-1, 7-2) won for the sixth time in seven games and built a 7-1 lead after two innings. McGuffey (1-4, 2-6) battled back and closed to within 7-4 in the top of the third on a three-run homer by Ella Brookman.
The rest of the game was a pitchers’ duel as Waynesburg’s Emma Ricciuti held the Highlanders scoreless the remainder of the way.
Paige Rutan had a double and scored twice for Waynesburg, which remained a game behind section leader South Park in the loss column.
Emily Vinski was 4-for-4 with a double for McGuffey. Gabby Pettit, Danielle White and Ellie Serna also doubled for the Highlanders.
