College baseball roundup: La Roche takes 2 from W&J in battle of ranked teams
David Lemley’s RBI single in the bottom of the eight inning gave 17th-ranked LaRoche a walkoff win in the nightcap as the Redhawks swept No. 19 Washington & Jefferson, 6-3 and 5-4, in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday.
Luis Navedo homered and drove in three runs in the opener, and Washington graduate Jonathan Spina had three hits, including a double and triple.
Mark Merlino homered for W&J.
The Presidents (18-7) rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth, two of which scored on an error, to tie the game at 4-4 before Lemley’s RBI single in the eighth won it for LaRoche (24-6).
Nick Gatkins had three hits for W&J in the second game.
• John Lee’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Bethany a 4-3 walk-off Presidents’ Athletic Conference win over Waynesburg before the Yellow Jackets ralled for an 11-2 win and doubleheader split.
John Przybylinski’s RBI single in the top of the seventh gave Waynesburg (6-8, 12-17) a 3-2 lead before Lee’s single in the bottom of the inning for Bethany (6-11, 11-19-1).
Tyler Reis homered twice and tripled in the nightcap, driving in four runs for Waynesburg, which scored six times in the first. Ben Miller also homered for the Yellow Jackets. Jacob Meyer was the winning pitcher.
• Peters Township graduate Chris Wastchak hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to help California beat Notre Dame (Ohio), 5-3, in the nightcap of a doubleheader and earn a split in non-conference action.
Brandyn Kail picked up the win for California (17-17) with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
Matt Seekins hit two homers and Angelo Tornatore and Robert Williams had one each for Notre Dame (11-27) in the opener. Danny Beaver had four hits and score four times.
California had just two hits in the game.
