High school softball roundup: Frazier edges Chartiers-Houston, controls Section 3-AA
Winning pitcher Logan Hartman drove in two runs on a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday as Frazier defeated visiting Chartiers-Houston for the second time in a week, 4-3, to take control of the Section 3-AA race.
After the Bucs (4-2, 10-2) had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the inning, Frazier’s Kara Mastowski reached on an error. Savanna Berklovich then walked and they moved up on a bunt. Hartman’s double to left field won it for the Commodores (6-0, 7-1), who beat Char-Houston, 7-2, last week.
Kayla Alderson, Lauren Lober, Jessica Fort and Macie Kesneck each doubled for Chartiers-Houston.
• Kayla Hopkins had three hits, drove in three and scored twice as Canon-McMillan won a key Class 6-A Section 1 game, beating Bethel Park, 7-1.
Abi Michelucci scattered five hits and struck out five for the Big Macs (5-1, 5-1).
Rachel Hankin tripled and Colby Reid doubled for Bethel Park (4-2, 4-2).
• Peters Township used a six-run sixth inning to beat McGuffey, 9-3, in a non-section game.
Jill Yeates homered, driving in three runs, and Victoria Boehme and Chloe Paugh both doubled for PT (4-3). Megan Gray had a home run for McGuffey (2-8).
• Sara Jubas and Lauren Burnett each homered, Claire Previte pitched four innings of shutout relief and South Fayette defeated West Mifflin 8-4 in Section 2-AAAA.
Jubas went 3-for-4, drove in three runs and scored three times to help South Fayette (3-4, 6-5) overcome deficits of 3-0 and 4-1. Jubas hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning that tied the score. Burnett followed with her home run two batters later, giving South Fayette a 5-4 lead. The Lions tacked on three runs in the sixth inning.
Previte allowed one hit over the final four innings for the win.
• Kourtney Gavatorta drove in six runs and Belle Vernon broke out of its hitting slump by rolling to an 11-1 victory over host Keystone Oaks in Section 2-AAA.
The Leopards (6-1, 10-1) had 15 hits and scored at least two runs in five different innings.
Winning pitcher Bailey Parshall threw a two-hitter and struck out 10. She helped her cause with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI. Gavatorta also had three hits including a double.
• Kylie Sinn threw a five-hitter and Shelbee McCann had a key two-run single in Carmichaels’ five-run fifth inning as the Mikes defeated visiting Burgettstown 6-1 in a nonsection game.
The teams were locked in a 1-1 tie when Carmichaels (7-3) used the five-run inning to take control of the game. The Mikes took the lead on a bases-loaded walk and made it 3-1 when they scored on a fielder’s choice. McCann then delivered the two-run single that made it 5-1. Megan Walker started the inning with a double, the game’s only extra-base hit.
Natalie McNett had three hits for Carmichaels.
• Allison Lowery and Hailee Ruskop each hit run-scoring singles in the bottom of the sixth inning as Laurel Highlands broke a tie and edged visiting Trinity 6-4 in Class 5-A Section 2.
Trinity (0-5, 2-5) was held to only three hits but the Hillers scored three times in the top of the third to tie the score at 4-4.
LH is 1-5 in section and 2-8 overall.
• Ringgold used a pair of four-run innings to climb above the .500 mark and defeat visiting McKeesport 12-7 in a Class 5-A Section 2 game.
Ringgold (4-3, 5-4) scored four times in the second inning to take a 6-3 lead, then secured the win with a four-run sixth.
Johnna Mocniak homered and Lauren Gohacki and Natalie Adams each had three hits for Ringgold to back winning pitcher Jillian Scherer.
McKeesport (2-4, 2-4) lost despite hitting three home runs, including two by Jhayla Bray.
• Dana Vatakis threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and also tripled as Monessen topped Avella, 18-1, in a three-inning Section 2-A game.
Monessen (5-1, 7-1) scored 12 runs in the first inning.
Paige Lawrence’s RBI single scored Paige Allen, who had tripled, for the Eagles (0-6, 0-7).
• Abby McIntire allowed only four hits in six innings and smacked a double during Mapletown’s 11-0 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A.
Hannah Dusenberry went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Maples (3-4, 4-7) and Sara Chory was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Makenzi Cree tripled and drove in two runs.
Caitlyn Dugan struck out eight in a losing effort and had two singles.
• A 10-run second inning propelled West Greene to a 15-2 victory over California in a five-inning Section 2-A game.
Every player in West Greene’s lineup had at least one hit. Madison Lampe went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and three runs scored. McKenna Lampe was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and three RBI. Marissa Rode went 2-for-2 and scored twice and Lexie Mooney doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored a run.
Madison Renner had two RBI and winning pitcher Jade Renner went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Pioneers (7-0, 12-0).
Kalsie Walker hit a double and Ashley Gush had an RBI for California (3-4, 3-6).
• Beth-Center won its first game of the season, defeating host Fort Cherry 9-5 in Section 3-AA. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
