High school softball roundup: Shimek’s homer caps comeback as Waynesburg stuns West Greene
Bailee Shimek capped Waynesburg’s four-run top of the seventh inning with a three-run homer as Waynesburg rallied for a stunning 7-6 victory over West Greene in a nonsection game Wednesday at Rice Energy Park.
It was the first loss of the season for West Greene (12-1) and ended the Pioneers’ 28-game regular-season winning streak.
Waynesburg improved its record to 8-2.
West Greene built a 5-3 lead on the strength of two home runs by McKenna Lampe and one by Madison Lampe – each a solo homer – before Waynesburg mounted its comeback. One-out singles by Paige Rutan and Rachel Elsenheimer set up Tara Staley’s RBI single that made it 5-4 in the seventh. After a foul out for the inning’s second out, Shimek homered to center field to give Waynesburg a 7-5 lead.
Waynesburg left fielder Hannah Kalsey robbed Madison Lampe of a potential extra-base hit, and possibly her second home run of the day, when she crashed into the fence in the bottom of the seventh to make a catch for the inning’s first out with a runner on base.
“The best catch I’ve ever seen in a high school game,” West Greene coach Bill Simms said.
West Greene, which was held to four hits by two Waynesburg pitchers, did pull to within 7-6 on Madison Renner’s RBI groundout.
An error – one of six by Waynesburg – brought the potential winning run to the plate with two outs but Raiders relief pitcher Emma Ricciuti induced a groundout to end the game.
Ricciuti allowed two hits over four innings to get credit for the win.
Waynesburg’s Tara Staley drove in two runs and Jordan Siebert had a double. Eisenheimer was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
McKenna Lampe was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs to go with the home runs.
• Rebecca Staley and Ashley Gush each homered and Bre Trusler struck out 10 as California pulled away late in the game and defeated host Mapletown 9-2 in Section 2-A.
Staley scored four runs and Gush was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Trusler threw a five-hitter as California improved to 4-4 in the section and 4-6 overall.
Taylor Vanata had a double for Mapletown (3-5, 3-8).
• For the second day in a row, Beth-Center defeated Section 3-AA rival Fort Cherry, edging the Rangers 9-8 on the Bulldogs’ home field.
Beth-Center (2-4, 2-5) scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead and then held off a rally by Fort Cherry (0-6, 3-6) in the top of the seventh.
Londyn Brown drove in four runs for B-C. Brown, winning pitcher MacKenzie Crile and Paige Moore each had two hits.
• Jillian Scherer pitched four shutout innings as Ringgold downed Steel Valley 4-2 in a non-section game. Johnna Mocniak and Lauren Gohacki each drove in a run for the Rams (4-3, 5-5).
• Angelina Paoli hit two doubles, homered and drove in three runs to help Albert Gallatin shut out Bentworth, 14-0, in a non-section game.
Maddie Hershberger struck out eight and allowed just two hits for AG (8-3). Hannah Turtzer, Maddie Flowers and Allyn Bezjak each hit a double. Bentworth fell to 6-7.
