High school baseball: Beth-Center’s big seventh leads to first win
Beth-Center erupted for four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to earn its first win of the season with a 5-1 Section 1-AA high school baseball victory Friday over Bentworth.
The Bulldogs (1-5, 1-7) had been limited to four hits in the first six innings by Josh Hughes, who struck out 10, in the first six innings before stringing together four hits in the seventh.
Nick Pryor’s RBI single scored Tyler Zelenik from second to put Beth-Center ahead and make a winner of Jake Knizer, who allowed six hits in seven innings.
Hughes had a double for the Bearcats (3-3, 5-6).
• Destin Weiser allowed only one hit and struck out five as Chartiers-Houston defeated Fort Cherry, 10-1, in a Section 1-AA game.
Chartiers-Houston (6-1, 7-3) built its lead in the second inning behind a Cam Hanley home run. A.J. Myers also added a home run in the fifth inning.
The Bucs were also paced by a 3-for-4 afternoon from Matt Whitfield.
Nate Higham took the loss for Fort Cherry (2-5, 4-6).
• Johnny DeFranco had a double, drove in three runs and scored three times to keep California unbeaten in Section 1-AA with a 14-4 five-inning win over Frazier.
Bob Harris also scored three runs for the Trojans (6-0, 9-1), who stole 14 bases in the game, while Drake Johnson doubled. Jacob Swartz got the victory.
Frazier falls to 2-4, 2-6.
• Joel Spishock doubled and drove in three runs and Carmichaels drew 13 walks and had six batters hit by a pitch in a 13-4 Section 1-AA win over Burgettstown.
Chad Ruse and Dylan Watson also doubled for the Mikes (4-2, 6-3), while Watson earned the victory.
Ryan Lounder had a pair of hits, including a triple, for Burgettstown (1-5, 2-6).
• Evan Johnston and Jake Amatangelo combined on a shutout as Belle Vernon defeated Elizabeth Forward, 5-0, in a Section 3-AAAA game.
Johnston struck out nine and allowed five hits over six innings, reaching 94 pitches and giving way to Amatangelo in the seventh. Tyle Seliga had two hits for Belle Vernon (4-2, 6-3).
Nick Wardhopped had two hits, including a double, for EF (0-6, 0-6).
