High school softball: Schmidt leads C-M past PT
Lindsay Schmidt had a monster day at the plate, collecting three hits, including a pair of homers, one of which was a grand slam, as Canon-McMillan defeated Peters Township, 14-0, in a five-inning Section 1-6A high school girls softball game Friday.
Schmidt drove in eight runs for the Big Macs (6-1, 6-1) and also scored three times to help support the two-hit pitching of Abi Mechelucci. Kylah Kubiczi also scored three runs for the Big Macs, while Katelyn Greaves and Mackenzie Hollie had three hits each.
Peters Township falls to 2-4, 4-4.
• Maddy Hershberger and Maddie Flowers combined on a three-hitter as Albert Gallatin edged Carmichaels, 2-1, in a non-section game.
Flowers also doubled and tripled, while Hershberger had a double for Albert Gallatin (4-5), which scored a single run each in the first and second innings.
Natalie McNett doubled, while Kylie Sinn scattered seven hits for the Mikes (6-3).
• Katlyn Pavlik hit a pair of home runs, while Jill Davidson also homered, as South Park defeated Charleroi, 16-0, in a four-inning Section 3-AAA game.
Jess Dean threw a two-hitter and also doubled for South Park (6-0. 8-1), which also got a double from Charlyn Blackburn.
Ashley Smith took the loss for the Cougars (1-5, 1-7).
• Rachel Pieto had three hits, including a triple, and unbeaten South Side Beaver erupted for seven runs in the top of the seventh to beat Chartiers-Houston, 12-2, in a non-section game.
Kassidi Rice homered and Sydney Payne and Hunter Hand both doubled for South Side Beaver (8-0), while Regan Hozak allowed just four hits to earn the win.
Kaci Alderson had two of the hits for the Bucs (10-3), including a home run, driving in both runs.
• Leah Lindley scattered three hits and gave up only one run as Bentworth defeated Burgettstown, 6-1, in a Section 3-AA game.
Bentworth (4-2, 7-7) was led by two doubles from Savannah Adams, another double from Autumn Zgorliski and a solo home run for Chase Watson.
Despite striking out five and failing to surrender a walk, Tori Carnes suffered the loss for Burgettstown (2-4, 2-9).
• Maddi Conn and Kendall Clevenger combined for five hits as Turkeyfoot defeated Mapletown, 6-5, in a non-section game.
After only scoring one run through six innings, Turkeyfoot scored five runs in the final inning behind doubles from Julee Frazee and Katelynn Pepe.
Mapletown (3-5, 3-9) nearly came back in the last inning with three runs of its own. The Maples 15-hit performance was paced by three singles from Macee Chesney. Hannah Dingle, Taylor Vantana and Michaela Perry each had a pair of hits.
Nate Mori and Tyler Reis both doubled and drove in two runs each as Waynesburg defeated Saint Vincent, 5-4, Friday in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball game.
Reis had three hits for the Yellow Jackets (7-8, 13-17), while Derek Whalen picked up the win.
Tanner Yard, T.J. Kuny and Greg Martin all had three hits each for Saint Vincent (7-8, 13-16), which had 14 hits in the game to 12 for Waynesburg.
• Washington & Jefferson pounded out 11 extra base hits and defeated Geneva, 23-3, in a PAC game.
Derek Helbing, Ryan Sciullo and James Artale all homered and Canon-McMillan graduate Frank Fortunato tripled for the 19th-ranked Presidents (14-2, 21-7).
Riley Groves picked up the victory, allowing four hits over six innings.
Tyler Paaduan had a double for Geneva (2-15, 8-23).
