High school baseball roundup: Monessen’s upset win moves Jefferson-Morgan to 2-A lead
Cory Fleming threw a two-hitter and took a shutout into the seventh inning as Monessen upset Section 2-A leader Greensburg central Catholic 7-1 Monday on the Centurions’ home field.
The loss by GCC (5-1, 5-2) moves Jefferson-Morgan (4-0, 4-4) into first place, percentage points against of the Centurions. Monessen (4-2, 4-5) is in third place.
Fleming, who struck out seven, helped his own cause by leading Monessen’s nine-hit attack with a double, triple and two RBI. Tyler Caterino also doubled.
• Hunter Robinson gave up only one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings and Waynesburg extended its winning streak to six games with a 4-2 victory at Seton-La Salle in a Section 3-A game.
Waynesburg remains undefeated in section play at 5-0 and 8-1 overall.
The Raiders scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and tacked on two key runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead. Luke Robinson and Trey Rohanna each had run-scoring doubles in the seventh.
Seton-La Salle (1-6, 2-6) pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh after Hunter Robinson was relieved after reaching the pitch-count limit. Robinson gave up four hits and three walks. He struck out seven.
Waynesburg used two relievers to get the final two outs. Dalton Riggenbach was credited with a save after ending the game with a strikeout after the Rebels had loaded the bases.
• Winning pitcher Bo Haines and reliever Chase Angotti combined on a three-hitter and Ringgold remained within striking distance of the Section 3-AAAA lead with a 7-2 victory at West Mifflin.
Ringgold (5-2, 8-2) extended its winning streak to five games and did so by scoring in five different innings against West Mifflin (2-5, 2-8).
Matt Morgan led Ringgold at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Haines had the only extra-base hit for the Rams, a double. The Rams had 12 hits.
• Canon-McMillan remained undefeated in Class 6-A Section 3 by taking advantage of wildness by Upper St. Clair pitchers and scoring eight runs in the sixth inning en route to a 12-3 victory at the McDowell Lane Field.
Winning pitcher Nick Drake struck out seven and Cam Weston hit two doubles for Canon-McMillan (7-0, 8-4), which has won seven in a row. The Big Macs trailed 3-1 in the fourth before they scored three times to take the lead, then broke the game open in the sixth.
Canon-McMillan had only five hits but four of them went for extra bases. Ian Hess and Jordan Castelli each had a double.
• Mapletown rallied to score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, then got a game-winning RBI single from Garrett Phillips in the top of the eighth to beat Geibel Catholic, 15-14, in a Section 2-A game.
Noah Haynes and Brandon Donley both had two doubles, while Dylan Rush tripled for the Maples (2-3, 3-6), who allowed nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to fall behind 14-7.
Ethan Jelliots, Dalton Elcock, Noah Beary and Colton Majhan all had doubles for Geibel (0-7, 0-9).
• Chartiers-Houston only managed four hits but took advantage of nine Burgettstown errors in a 12-1 Section 1-AA six-inning win over the Blue Devils.
Ryan James allowed just two hits, though one was a triple to Ryan Lounder, for the Bucs (7-1, 8-3).
Sam Huggins took the hard-luck loss for Burgettstown (1-7, 2-9).
• Michael Nugent’s third single of the game drove in the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Carrick defeated Trinity, 4-3, in a Class 5-A Section 2 game.
David Menosky, who allowed two hits and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings before reaching 100 pitches, drove in the tying run for Carrick (2-5, 3-6) after Trinity (2-5, 4-7) took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Logan Defillippo drove in two runs for the Hillers.
• Ethan Young hit a pair of home runs and drove in four, and Peters Township scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning to beat Baldwin, 13-2, in a five-inning Class 6-A Section 3 game.
Tor Sehnert also homered for the Indians (5-2, 11-2) and Eric Riotto was the winning pitcher.
John Kozarian homered for Baldwin (3-4, 7-5).
• Emery Anden scattered four hits and struck out eight as Charleroi shut out Washington, 5-0, in a Section 3-AAA game.
Cole Perry had a double for the Cougars (4-2, 8-3), who broke the game open in the seventh with four runs.
Connor Bedillion took the loss for Washington (2-4, 4-6).
• Alex Adams tripled, while Nate Luketich, Tyler Jacobs and Brenden Padilla all drove in two runs each to lead California past Fort Cherry, 16-5, in a Section 1-AA game.
California (8-0, 11-1) scored 12 runs in the first inning.
Fort Cherry falls to 2-6, 4-7.
