Observer-Reporter Athlete of the Week
Name: Lindsay Schmidt
School: Canon-McMillan
Sport: Softball
Class: Freshman
Schmidt’s week: The hard-hitting designated hitter had a season’s worth of production in two games over a 24-hour period. Schmidt hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in 12 runs as the Big Macs split those games.
Schmidt had two home runs and drove in eight in a 14-0 victory over Peters Township Friday, then knocked in four runs in the Big Macs’ 6-5 loss to undefeated West Allegheny.
“I wasn’t nervous,” said Schmidt. “I just tried to clear my mind. I was looking for a pitch to hit and that was a good opportunity to do so with runners on base. I saw the center fielder going back but I didn’t think it would be out.”
The two home runs moved Schmidt’s total to four for the season, tops on a team that has a 7-2 overall record and a 7-1 mark in Section 1 of Class 6-A heading into Wednesday. Her batting average hovers around .470.
“She is really barrelling the ball up right now,” said Canon-McMillan head coach Michele Moeller. “She’s just attacking the ball. She is not going out of the zone and swinging at bad pitches.”
No stranger to C-M: Schmidt is one of the up-and-coming players from the Lady Knights travel team that C-M assistant coach Steve Moskal manages. Schmidt has been on the team for six years.
“We knew she was talented,” Moeller said. “She is part of the next group of kids coming through the program.”
Schmidt played T-ball at age 6 and briefly considered pursuing baseball, rather than softball. She is a natural outfielder and Moeller said she will be in either left or right field next season. Her spot as designated hitter offers some challenges, especially when the Big Macs are in the field.
“I like being the designated player,” she said. “When they are out there, I usually go with one of my teammates and hit into a net.”
While it’s still early, Schmidt does have plans for the future.
“I’d like to go to college,” she said. “My dream school is Florida.”
