College baseball: W&J runs scorless streak to 27 innings; Vento sets HR record
Washington & Jefferson, ranked No. 19 in Division III, ran its streak of not allowing a run to 27 innings over four games by sweeping a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader at Saint Vincent, 3-0 and 9-0.
Senior Nick Vento broke the W&J career home run record in the first inning of the opener with his 23rd homer. He was tied with Frank Quirin (2008-10) atop the list.
Winner Trevor Kerr and Derek Helbing combined on a six-hit shutout in the opener. Riley Groves improved his record to 6-2 with a four-hit shutout in the second game. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Mark Merlino was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI.
W&J leads the PAC with an 18-2 record in conference play and is 25-7 overall. Saint Vincent is 8-12, 14-20.
• California was swept in a PSAC doubleheader at IUP , 10-7 and 7-3.
Cal drops to 19-23 with a 10-11 record in PSAC West action. The Crimson Hawks improve to 11-9, 20-13.
In Game 1, IUP scored all 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Cal led 2-0 in the second game before allowing four runs in the second inning and three in the fourth.
