High school baseball roundup: California rallies to win 12th straight

California remained unbeaten in Section 1-AA and ran its winning streak to 12 games but the Trojans had to overcome a four-run deficit to beat host Burgettstown 5-4 Friday afternoon.

Burgettstown (1-9, 2-11) led 4-0 in the fourth inning before California (10-0, 13-1) rallied with a two-run fourth, a single run in the sixth and a two-run seventh.

Winning pitcher Brandon Powell was 3-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Brendan Sheehan doubled and drove in a run.

Burgettstown’s Ryan Lounder had a big game with a single, double, triple, two runs and two RBI.

• Trent Vietmeier and Zach McGowan combined on a five-hit shutout as Montour defeated Trinity 4-0 in a Class 5-A Section 2 game.

All of the scoring was done in the top of the third inning as Montour (6-3, 6-4) produced an RBI groundout, two run-scoring singles and a sacrifice fly.

Vietmeier gave up four hits and two walks over five innings. Abram King had a double for Trinity (2-7, 4-9). It was the game’s lone extra-base hit. Camden Zaken was 2-for-3.

Logan Defillipo threw a five-hit complete game for the Hillers, striking out three.

• Matthew Barrish fired a six-hitter and Carmichaels took advantage of walks by Fort Cherry pitching to edge the visiting Rangers 3-1 in a Section 1-AA.

Carmichaels is 8-2 in section and 10-3 overall. The Mikes are chasing section leader California, which is unbeaten in league play.

Carmichaels scored two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth, and that was all Barrish would need as he needed only 98 pitches to throw a complete game. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

Carmichaels scored one run in the fourth on a squeeze bunt by Liam Shea and the other on a bases-loaded walk by Steven Spehar. A wild pitch pushed home the Mikes’ run in the fifth.

Fort Cherry (2-8, 5-9) scored in the sixth on an error. The Rangers’ Shane Smith was the only player in the game with more than one hit as he singled twice.

• Belle Vernon remained one of the hottest teams in Class AAAA with a 6-2 victory at Keystone Oaks. The Leopards have won eight in a row.

Belle Vernon (8-2 in Section 3, 10-3) scored five times in the second inning and that was enough for winning pitcher Evan Johnston and reliever Jake Amatangelo, who combined to scatter eight hits.

Tyler Seliga drove in two runs for Belle Vernon, which had 10 hits, all singles. Jacob Callaway was 2-for-3.

Joe McCarthy homered for KO (2-8, 2-11).

• Dalton Simonelli threw a five-hit complete game and Avella stayed in the Section 3-A playoff hunt with a 6-2 victory over visiting Sewickley Academy.

Simonelli struck out five and walked three as Avella improved to 3-4 in the section and 5-6 overall. Simonelli helped his cause with a triple and two RBI. The Eagles scored all their runs in the first two innings, building a 6-1 lead.

Austin Lis had a double and two RBI, James Taylor doubled and Owen English for 3-for-4 to lead a 10-hit Avella attack.

John Delvecchio hit two doubles for Sewickley Academy (6-3, 7-4) and Dimitri Gray had one double.

• Ringgold extended its winning streak to seven games with a 3-1 victory over visiting Uniontown in Secttion 3-AAAA.

Winning pitcher Bo Haines and reliever Chase Angotti combined on a three-hitter. Ringgold (6-2, 10-2) took a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning before the Red Raiders (4-6, 5-8) spoiled the shutout bid.

Ringgold also was held to three hits but the Rams got two RBI from Matt Morgan. Jake Mayer scored a run and drove in another.

• Mt. Pleasant combined nine singles with five Washington errors to edge the Little Prexies 5-3 in Section 3-AAA.

Mt. Pleasant (6-2, 7-5) took a 1-0 lead into the fifth and then put together back-to-back two-run innings. Washington (3-6, 5-8) cut the gap to 5-3 by scoring two times in the bottom of the sixth.

Losing pitcher Connor Bedillion struck out seven and had a run-scoring hit in the sixth.

• Bethel Park broke a tie by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat visiting Peters Township 4-1 in Class 6-A Section 3.

Bethel Park (5-3, 9-5) had three hits, including a run-scoring double by Kevin Kogler, and a walk in the pivotal inning. The loss drops Peters Township to 6-3, 12-3.

The Indians were held to three hits by winning pitcher Justin Meis, who threw a complete game.

• Mark Engel and Mike Turconmi combined on a four-hitter and Section 2-AAAA leader Blackhawk defeated visiting South Fayette 7-4.

The loss drops South Fayette (5-5, 6-6) to the .500 mark. Blackhawk is 10-0, 15-0.

Chris Piccione drove in three runs for the Cougars and Nick Cerani had three hits. The Cougars scored all seven of their runs in the foruth inning.

Mitch Dunay and Tristan Tinney each doubled for South Fayette (5-5, 6-5). Joey Alcorn drove in two runs.

• Adam Morris homered, Kyle Thompson hit two doubles and Mitchell Roell drove in three runs as Section 3-AAAA leader South Park defeated McGuffey 13-1 in five innings.

South Park is 9-1 in section and 14-2 overall. McGuffey, which is battling for the fourth and final playoff berth from the section, is 4-5, 6-8. The Highlanders were held to three hits.

• Kylar Amos’ go-ahead single triggered a seven-run top of the eighth inning as West Greene won at Mapletown, 14-7, in Section 2-A.

Mapletown (2-6, 3-9) forced extra innings by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-7.

Zack Abbitt was 2-for-2 with a home run in the second inning and five RBI to lead West Greene (2-6, 2-7). Zack Pettit, Mike Howard and Christian Fox each doubled. Garvin Scott was the winning pitcher with two innings of relief.

Dylan Rush, Brian Bogden and Chuckie Lash each had a double for Mapletown and Brandon Donley drove in four runs.

• Zach Southern allowed two hits and Chartiers-Houston scored three times off errors in a 6-1 victory over Beth-Center in a Section 1-AA game. The Bucs are 8-2 and 9-4. B-C fell to 2-8 and 2-10.
